Background Information - PG

UNOPS Procurement Group (PG) leads the strategic approach for all procurement and supply chain activities. UNOPS PG focuses on results across the global organization by leveraging volumes and shaping markets with proper planning and the establishment of commodity teams. Through a consistent focus on the development of core product categories and long-term agreements with suppliers, the transfer of knowledge through training, policy manuals, best practices, and tools, UNOPS PG ensures that it supplies value, delivers results and changes lives.

To support the integration of sustainability into UNOPS procurement processes, PG includes a small team of experts who support the business to do just that. The team works across the business to continuously enhance and improve how sustainability is integrated into procurement policy, training, guidelines, templates, and tools with the ultimate goal to make sustainable procurement he default modality at UNOPS. The sustainability team also manages several innovation programmes related to the sustainable development of local markets, with a particular focus on increasing the capacity of women and youth owned businesses to be successful.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Sustainability Team Leader, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting a variety of tasks and work packages as part of his/her internship period. We are seeking motivated and passionate individuals who may have a background in sustainability or a related function, and who may have a working knowledge of procurement and supply chain or logistics. Importantly, however, as internships are designed to be valuable learning experiences, previous work experience is not a pre-requisite.

Some of the specific tasks for which the intern may be involved with include, but are not limited to:

  • Communication: Support internal communications efforts with field offices through development of emails, webinars, articles, case studies, maintenance of internal website and monitoring different email inboxes to ensure timely service. Support the development of new guidance, tools and templates on sustainable procurement.
  • Research and analysis: Support and in some cases, manage individual research projects (i.e. data collection, market research), including on new and innovative trends. Analyse large amounts of data and draw salient conclusions and recommendations. Support the development of key SP reports.
  • Coordination support: Support coordination of a variety of workshops, missions and discussions with internal and external partners. Support training events/initiatives including set up, logistics and ongoing management.
  • Other duties as required.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

Applicants must be enrolled in a university degree such as a Bachelor, Masters or Ph.D., or have graduated within three years prior to the application date of the internship.

Certification

Procurement certifications such as CIPS, PRINCE2, would be an advantage.

Experience

  • While no prior work experience is required, some previous experience in sustainability or corporate social responsibility (through work, education or other) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of business operations, procurement, supply chain, and logistics is desirable.
  • Strong computer literacy: MS Office: Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Sharepoint is an asset.

Language Skills

Fluent English is required. Knowledge of another UN language such as French, Spanish, Russian or Arabic is an asset.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
