Organizational Setting

 

 

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in\: improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; developing indigenous capabilities around the world for national energy planning; deploying new nuclear power plants; preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.

 

The Division of Energy Planning and Nuclear Information and Knowledge comprises the Planning and Economic Studies Section, Nuclear Knowledge Management Section and the Nuclear Information Section. The Division is responsible for strengthening capacities in energy and nuclear power planning, building capacities to manage nuclear knowledge and provide knowledge management services to interested member states, and to procure and provide printed and electronic information in the area of nuclear science and technology.

The Nuclear Information Section (NIS) consists of the IAEA Library Unit, the INIS Unit and the Systems Development and Support Group. It foster the exchange of scientific and technical information on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology; increases awareness in Member States of the importance of maintaining efficient and effective systems for managing such information; provides information services and support to Member States and to the IAEA; and assists with capacity building and training.


Main Purpose

 

The Library Assistant contributes to the efficient operation of Library services and the proper use of its information resources. He/she is responsible for receiving, identifying and dispatching library materials for processing to the appropriate staff members based on the established guidelines, registering received serial publications in the serials database; processing serial issues for display, routing, collection or discard; making claims for missing issues; maintaining records in Library databases; shelving, filing and physical maintenance of the Library collection, including journals, technical reports, standards and documents; processing the Section's mail.


Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Process serial publications\: receive serials publications and verify and register them in the serials database; process the issues for distribution and for Library reading room displays; route serial issues to users and prepare them for inclusion in or discard from the collections; claim missing issues from suppliers; perform follow-up actions to ensure delivery of materials requested.
  • Update and maintain serials database\: create publication patterns for new and existing serial titles; monitor changes of serial titles (bibliographic mutations), and changes to frequency of publications that require additional, new records, or modifications of existing records and update the information in the serials database.
  • Receive and examine unsolicited gift information materials from selected organizations and publishers in accordance with the established rules for further processing and discard all inappropriate ones.
  • Maintain records and prepare statistics related to serial publications and services. Keep and compile statistics for the annual contributions in-kind report received in the Library from IAEA Member States in accordance with the established procedure.
  • Receive mail, identify appropriate mail recipients, sort and dispatch all incoming and outgoing Section mail, publications and information materials, including parcels, monographs, serials, documents, newspapers, non-print materials, invoices, vendor messages, and others.
  • Responsible for proper shelving and filing of serial publications, technical reports, standards and various documents received; daily maintenance of the library materials, journals, technical reports, standards, documents, and quarterly preparation of journal binders, according to established schedules and procedures.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

 

  • Completed secondary education
  • Minimum of four years relevant working experience in library and information services, or other related fields.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
  • English language test (level 2) and Typing test (level 1) to IAEA standard.

Remuneration

 

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 38629 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report. Recruitment will be on a LOCAL BASIS only. Testing may be part of the recruitment process.
