The Secretariat seeks an individual who will provide support in moving forward its knowledge management, advocacy and evidence building priorities, particularly expanding to other regional networks. Under the supervision of the Senior Advisor, the communications and advocacy intern will gain valuable skills by contributing to policy and advocacy materials and messages on girls’ education and gender equality and will contribute to building the resource and evidence base for UNGEI and its partners. The intern will support and ensure that UNGEI’s communications materials are based on strategic analysis, and current knowledge about trends and issues.

UNICEF hosts the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI). UNGEI is a multi-stakeholder partnership and works at the global, regional and country level. It is committed to promoting gender equality in and through education and the empowerment of girls and young women. UNGEI partners unite within this common umbrella and work together to harness the benefits of collaborative advantage by:

  1. linking work at multiple levels – global, regional and country;
  2. strengthening a partnership approach by bringing actors with diverse skills and competencies to the table;
  3. promoting evidence and good practice through gender analysis tools for the education sector and other related sectors;
  4. policy advocacy that contributes to a common voice within the education development community and building a communications platform supported by the UNGEI Secretariat.

How can you make a difference?

The Secretariat seeks an individual who will provide support in moving forward its knowledge management, advocacy and evidence building priorities, particularly expanding to other regional networks. Under the supervision of the Senior Advisor, the communications and advocacy intern will gain valuable skills by contributing to policy and advocacy materials and messages on girls’ education and gender equality and will contribute to building the resource and evidence base for UNGEI and its partners.  The intern will support and ensure that UNGEI’s communications materials are based on strategic analysis, and current knowledge about trends and issues.

The communications and advocacy Intern would contribute to the following activities:

  • Support evidence building
    • Supporting the collection, consolidation and analysis of findings from a review of published literature, case study interviews and other materials pertaining to key advocacy areas
    • Providing background research, synthesis and data analysis for policy briefs, position and discussion papers on themes related to gender and education
  • Advance UNGEI’s policy dialogue and advocacy efforts
    • Collaborating on content strategy planning for key advocacy campaigns and broader communications activities throughout the year
    • Helping to produce a range of written materials for different channels and target audiences, including press releases, blogs, news stories, and more
    • Assisting with content production for and management of owned digital channels, using tools to monitor, measure and evaluate performance
    • Contributing to the development of media, influencer and communications partner lists for outreach purposes
  • Contribute to strengthening the UNGEI website
    • Produce a fortnightly resource list of the latest studies, news articles, policy papers and reports on gender and education
    • Tagging existing content, identifying gaps in the coverage and exploring new sources of material around key content pillars
    • Helping to plan and manage the development of the website, including campaign specific pages, in line with the advocacy strategy

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, Master’s program graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years in education, social sciences, gender and/or international development.
  • Interest in international development and previous experience or study in gender and education.  
  • Strong analytical and writing skills with ability to synthesize large amounts of information (quantitative and qualitative) and produce succinct and effective policy documents.
  • Experience of graphic design and image editing software desirable. 
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Location:

The internship will be based in the NY headquarters office with the possibility of up to 50% home-based work

Duration:

This will be a part time / full time internship, the duration will be for 3-6 months, with an ideal start date of 1st June and an opportunity to extend to 6 months if desirable to the post holder and Secretariat.

Salary/Payment:
In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,500 per month for full-time work; part-time internship will be paid accordingly. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

Insurance:
UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work with the Nutrition Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment: 
The intern will work at UNICEF House, New York.  S/he will work with the UNGEI Secretariat and report to the supervisor of this internship.  S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in Secretariat's meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

Deadline:
The deadline for applications will be 22nd February, UNGEI Secretariat will review the applications and schedule a short phone interview with the shortlisted candidates. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. 

If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.
