Background

UNODC’s Regional Office for South Asia is implementing focused communications and advocacy activities in the framework of its Regional Programme and the region it covers, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The communication strategy is focused on the following activities: (a) updating of content and maintenance of UNODC South Asia website; (b) organization of and support to office events; (c) production and dissemination of UNODC publications and (d) interaction with media on UNODC issues in a structured and focused way; (e) advocacy and fund raising. 

For the purpose, UNODC intends to recruit a Communications Officer with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively accomplish the mentioned tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Representative, the Communications Officer will be responsible to:

  • Evaluate, create and/or update communication materials (internal/external, print and electronic): writing articles, brochures, flyers, website content, web-stories etc.
  • Reflect and update UNODC profile and work on social media like twitter, facebook etc.
  • Develop and execute an adequate and integral communication plan for internal and external communication.
  • Coordinate and facilitate ongoing internal and external PR and communication activities.
  • Produce and disseminate regularly a newsletter on UNODC South Asia.
  • Develop initiatives and ideas that lead to fund raising and awareness on UNODC’s work and mandates.
  • Produce, disseminate and keep stock of UNODC publications.
  • Lead and support in the organization of events as required.
  • Maintain the database of UNODC contacts in the region.
  • Handle media interaction in consultation with the Representative.
  • Maintain a repository of all communications-related activities on UNODC ROSA.
  • Update if necessary the communication strategy and its implementation tools, including monitoring, evaluation and reporting on external communication and fund-raising efforts; take responsibility for making these tools effective and efficient and report regularly on their carrying out and overall fund-raising activities.
  • Update the donors’ map on a regular basis.
  • Establish and maintain beneficial relations with incumbent and potential donors, including donor countries, international and national foundations, the private sector and academia.
  • Develop communication and fund-raising networks.

Required Skills and Experience

Educational Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in communications or related field with relevant professional experience.

Experience and skills:

  • Three to five years of experience as a communications officer in areas related to international cooperation and universal goals or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in producing written outputs for a variety of purposes and audiences. 
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into easily understandable, attractive and clear language.
  • Skilled in website designing and online editing tools viz. flash, multimedia etc.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, including communication, team-working and organizational skills.
  • Creative and innovative with the ability to think outside the box.

Languages:

  • Excellent spoken and written English is required.
