The Europe and Central Asia Regional Office at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International is seeking to appoint a dynamic, experienced researcher to join the team on a fixed term contract ending December 2018.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a research-based campaigning organization, investigating and documenting human rights issues is fundamental to our advocacy and lobbying work. Our European Union team requires a researcher to take the lead in initiating and conducting strategic human rights research on Western Europe, in particular in Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, by providing regional and thematic expertise, excellent research skills and sound political judgement. You will be required to conduct and co-ordinate research activities, monitor, investigate and analyse political, legal and social developments and human rights conditions, give authoritative advice on these areas and prepare human rights action materials including the writing of the human rights reports. Thematic areas that this role will work on include, but are not limited to, counter-terrorism, criminal justice, and migration.

ABOUT YOU

With extensive experience of working in human rights, and particularly in thematic areas including counter-terrorism, you must have first-hand in-depth knowledge and experience of working within this region and listed countries. You will also have experience of in-depth, on the ground human rights research. You'll have a background in law, journalism, academia or activism with the ability to identify and thoroughly investigate those issues and ensure our voice has authority. You'll be an excellent writer. You will need proven research and communication skills, impartial political judgement, coupled with strong strategic thought. Fluency in English and French is essential.
