OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI)\:

To establish and leverage the impact of an effective prevention and control programme that targets the reduction of morbidity and mortality resulting from diseases, through a comprehensive approach to immunization, that is made timely and responsive through ground level surveillance and the promotion of related health interventions.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Laboratory Coordinator for VPD in EPI, and guidance of the Coordinator, EPI, the incumbent will perform the following functions\:

 

1. Facilitate implementation of quality assurance/control activities for VPD network laboratories (polio, measles and rubella, Japanese encephalitis, rotavirus and invasive bacterial diseases) in the Western Pacific Region for WHO-coordinated quality assurance programmes, follow-up on results and provide technical support to network laboratories when needed;

 

2. Provide regular monitoring and analysis of cell sensitivity testing for polio network laboratories and provide feedback to the laboratories;

 

3. Monitor and update information in Global Polio Laboratory Network Management System including submission of annual reports, review data and provide a feedback;

 

4. Monitor accreditation status of VPD laboratories\: conduct laboratory accreditation/assessment for selected laboratories as requested; review of data and provide the feedback;

 

5. Support procurement and logistics of laboratory testing kits and reagents;

 

6. Assist with preparations for laboratory-related meetings, trainings and workshops and drafting reports; and

 

7. Perform other related tasks as may be required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: First university degree in biological or laboratory science from a recognized university.
Desirable\: Postgraduate training in virology.

Experience

Essential\: Minimum of five years' experience, including experience at international level, in a laboratory of which at least three years' experience in laboratory testing of at least two of the following diseases\: polio, measles and rubella, rotavirus and Japanese encephalitis (JE). Experience in the implementation of quality assurance and quality control programmes in laboratory settings.
Desirable\: Relevant work experience with international organizations in developing country setting. Experience with laboratory accreditation system of VPDs network laboratories.

Skills

Essential\: Knowledge of methods and procedures for laboratory surveillance in the area of VPD, specifically for laboratory testing, both serological and molecular (genotyping), of polioviruses, measles and rubella, rotavirus and JE laboratory networks and knowledge of quality management mechanisms in laboratory settings.

 

Ability to work under pressure and to mobilize inputs from colleagues. Ability to write effectively and concisely. Familiarity with standard office software packages. Ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapt to diverse educational and cultural backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct are essential. Familiarity with governmental and WHO channels and procedures is desirable.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 59,151 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1784 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
