OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To eradicate polio from Pakistan as per the objectives laid out in the Global Polio eradication Initiative (GPEI) End Game and Strategic Plan 2013-2018 as well as to reduce morbidity and mortality of other EPI target diseases

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of the WHO Representative to Pakistan and the Manager Polio Eradication and Emergency Support, the incumbent will manage and direct WHO's inputs to polio eradication in Pakistan, in close collaboration with national authorities and other partners, including\:1) Collaborate and coordinate with the health authorities of Pakistan and other partners in designing and developing an effective national programme for polio eradication and ensuring that it is in place and implemented. This includes supporting the development of the annual National Emergency Action Plans for polio eradication, and supporting the Prime Minister's Focal Point for polio eradication and the Ministry of Health in developing and implementing key strategies for polio eradication. 2) Manage and coordinate the inputs of WHO into polio eradication in Pakistan, including the management of WHO country polio team, to coordinate with other programmes in the country office, and to coordinate inputs of the Regional Office and Headquarters polio teams in polio eradication activities in Pakistan. 3) Plan, develop, organize and deliver capacity building activities to health care workers in the management of polio eradication and support.4) Coordinate closely with polio eradication partners in Pakistan, in particular UNICEF, Rotary International, CDC, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to build and ensure a strong common platform for support for the Government of Pakistan, and to ensure best and the most efficient use of partner agency resources.5) Provide technical support and guidance for implementation of EPI, including planning for the strengthening of immunization goals, and strengthening surveillance of EPI preventable diseases based on experience of surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis.6) Prepare programme reports and follow-up reports for special activities within the programme, particularlyin poliomyelitis eradication7) Advocate/promote collaboration activities with potential donors and UN partners in eradicating polio and other EPI target diseases by taking the leading role in these activities.8) Undertake other duties, as required, in relation to other programmes of collaboration in Pakistan

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: University degree in Medicine or in Health related field and Master's degree in public health majoring in epidiomology
Desirable\:

Experience

Essential\: At least 10 years ofrelevant experience in public health, particularly disease control at the national and international levels
Desirable\: Experience in immunization programmes as well as in-field training

Skills

Ability to administer and to evaluate public health programmes, especially EPI programmes and polio eradication.Being able to build and promote partnerships across the organization and beyondCapacity promoting WHO's position in health leadershipDemonstrated ability to work constructively with people of different cultural and educational backgroundsExcellent knowledge and technical expertise in epidemiology ad disease prevention, control and eradication

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 85,543 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2224 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
