NRC is looking for a Livelihoods and Food Security Technical Officer for our field offices in Maiduguri; Biu, Damasak; Dikwa and Monguno - Borno State in Northern Nigeria. The purpose of the Livelihoods and Food Security Technical Officer is the day to day implementation of the Livelihoods and Food Security projects in Borno State.

NRC initiated country operations in Nigeria in June 2015, in order to respond to the critical and increasing needs in the country. NRC currently has a full team based in Maiduguri and a coordination office in Abuja. NRC is currently providing services across various sectors namely; Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFI); Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WASH); Food Security; and Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA) in order to address identified humanitarian needs.

The Livelihoods and Food Security Technical Officer reports to the Livelihoods and Food Security Coordinator (Irrigation).

Job description

  • Ensure that projects target most vulnerable and explore new and better ways to assist
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement
  • Apply a knowledge of fundamental geology to develop an understanding of how rock types and structure in an area impact on groundwater occurrence and movement.
  • understand and interpret maps, geographical data, historical evidence and models to build up a picture of the groundwater regime.
  • Undertake environment impact assessments of groundwater abstraction and management activities. Interpret data on geo physical surveys and provide recommendations
  • Analyze collected information, to assess and predict the impact of activities such as agriculture, on groundwater quality and resource availability.

Qualifications

  • A first degree in geology, environmental science, geophysics, science or engineering is required.
  • Postgraduate qualification is an added advantage.
  • Experience from working as a Project Officer in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheets is required,
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, GPS, Arc GIS and Google Earth is strongly desirable
  • Inherent knowledge on the many processes and components of hydrogeology in Borno State
  • Desire and ability to learn new applications and methods in hydrogeology by attending training programs and seminars
  • Excellent communication skills - written and spoken - in English required.
  • Must be willing to work as a team member, take direction, and share technical skills with colleagues and counterparts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Some knowledge of English

We offer

  • Commencement: April 2018
  • Duration: 12 months
  • Salary/benefits: According to NRC’s general directions (Grade Level 6 Step 1)
  • Duty stations: Maiduguri; Biu; Damasak; Dikwa and Monguno with 60% frequent travels. Travel outside duty stations is dependent on changing security conditions, especially for certain roads in the area.
