A core component of our work is our role as the Support Unit of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC), an intergovernmental coalition of 30 member states who collectively advocate for the promotion of privacy and freedom of expression online. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and organised Programme Officer to join our team and contribute to the work of the FOC.


The job
 

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a focused and dynamic individual joining a hardworking team who work on a diverse range of internet-related and digital issues including encryption, data protection, online content regulation, cybersecurity, and business and human rights.


They will work closely with GPD’s Executive Directors to enable the FOC to effectively achieve its goals and objectives. The responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the primary Point of Contact (POC) for both FOC Member States and external stakeholders;

  • Ensuring the effective management of the Freedom Online Coalition Support Unit (FOC SU), including the implementation and development of FOC Standard Operating Procedures;

  • Providing support to the FOC Chair and the implementation of the FOC Program of Action;

  • Ensuring effective communication across all FOC stakeholders, including the FOC Diplomatic Networks and Advisory Network;

  • Managing all external communications channels of the FOC, including the FOC newsletter, website and social media accounts;

  • Representing the FOC at key international engagements, when required;

  • Organising FOC meetings and events, including FOC Strategy and Coordination meetings, and supporting the Freedom Online Conference, the premier event of the Coalition;

  • Effectively managing all project management tasks related to the FOC Support Unit, including the development and renewal of project grants and supporting the monitoring and evaluation of FOC activities.


Essential Skills and Experience

  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in at least one relevant field including but not limited to, international relations, global governance, diplomacy, law, or politics;

  • Excellent coordination and organisational skills, including exceptional attention to detail;

  • Excellent time-keeping skills and ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines;

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to analyse complex ideas and present them in a clear manner for a range of stakeholders;

  • Self-motivated and organised, and able to work well independently and in a team;

  • An interest in internet-related and digital issues;

  • A basic knowledge of human rights;

  • Fluent written and spoken English;

  • Permission to live and work in the United Kingdom.


Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Practical experience of working with government stakeholders, either at an Intergovernmental Organisation or within government;

  • Practical experience of working on internet-related and digital issues;

  • Fluency in a language other than English.


Terms and Conditions

  • Working days: Full time

  • Start date: As soon as possible

  • Length of contract: One Year Fixed Term

  • Salary: £30,000 - £35,000

  • Holidays: 25 days (excluding public holidays), pro rata

  • Line manager: Executive Director
