Background and Justification

UNICEF works on three key priorities in South Africa including Early Childhood Development, Results for Adolescents and Violence against children. These are in line with the priorities set by government in the National Development Plan. One key priority - Violence against Children is being applied to both ECD as well as adolescents. UNICEF recognizes that all children have the right to live free from emotional, physical or sexual violence. However, many children continue to experience violence, which leads to lasting physical, mental & emotional harm, whether the child is a direct victim or a witness. Children's exposure to violence plays a role in transmitting violence from one generation to the next, perpetuating a vicious cycle that is difficult to break.

The focus on Early Childhood development plays a role in shaping health, education, social & economic outcomes for the duration of a child's life. It also establishes a foundation for building human capital, since healthy & socially adjusted children are more likely to grow into adults who are socially & economically productive. During adolescence, girls & boys develop values & skills that can significantly influence their sense of well-being & development.

UNICEF South Africa Country Office (SACO) has been fundraising from the private sector for over 7 years. While fundraising has primarily been through corporate partnerships, the office is now making focused efforts to build its individual supporter base, primarily through pledge giving (individuals that donate by automated payments from bank transfers, usually on a monthly basis).

Pledge fundraising is a South Africa county office priority and a long-term solution to securing flexible resources for the country programme. Fundraising using telemarketing services has been one of the main driver of pledge acquisition for UNICEF globally as well as for SACO.

Following a detailed mapping of the private sector and the development of a resource mobilisation strategy in January 201, the team is active in recruiting individual donors. This requires ongoing activities in managing donor database, analysis of the data for improving results, and donor servicing on a regular basis.
