Background

The UNDP-GEF Project “Strengthening human resources, legal frameworks, and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol” (Global ABS Project) is a 3-year project that specifically aims at assisting 24 countries in the development and strengthening of their national ABS frameworks, human resources, and administrative capabilities to implement the Nagoya Protocol. The Global ABS team will undertake pilot gender analyses as part of the management response to mainstream gender equality into project interventions. It will enable the ABS country teams to understand country focused challenges and opportunities influencing the role of Women, Youth and Elderly in the ABS sectors / value chains and will provide operational recommendations to address the drivers of gender inequalities. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Global ABS team is seeking a gender intern with a good knowledge of gender equality concerns within the fields of environment and biodiversity to support the pilot gender analyses to be conducted in 2018. The candidate is expected to support the following processes:

  • Desk research and review of both peer-reviewed and gray literature on gender within the fields of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge;
  • Validation of initial findings and analysis of grey areas;
  • Field research, focus groups and expert interviews;
  • Data analysis and validation of key findings and recommendations;
  • Actionable road map to mainstreaming gender equality.

The internship will also span broader aspects in terms of research tasks and innovative approaches related to Access and Benefit Sharing and valorization of genetic resources.

Required Skills and Experience

Academic Qualifications / Education:

Desired field of study in gender studies, social sciences, development, or any other relevant fields, and must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); 
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); 
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Experience in conducting desk research on related topics;
  • Solid analytical skills in analyzing social data and reports;
  • Good writing skills to draft articles, blogs, and other content formats;
  • Good knowledge of social media an asset;
  • Familiarity with UNDPs work in environment and biodiversity desirable.

Language skills:

  • Written and spoken proficiency in English; 
  • Knowledge of other UN languages would be desirable.

Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement.The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.Application procedure: The application should contain:
