Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.


The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section (NFCMS) assists interested Member States in the development of safe, environmentally friendly, economically viable, proliferation-resistant and sustainable fuel cycle options and it encourages information exchange on the exploration, mining and processing of uranium and thorium, on the design, manufacturing and performance of nuclear fuels, on the management of spent fuel, and on the development of advanced and innovative nuclear fuels and fuel cycles.

Main Purpose

As the leader of a team of uranium resources and production specialists, and reporting to the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section Head, the Team Leader plans the work programme and implements the activities related to the evaluation of raw materials from the standpoint of resources estimation and availability, economics and sustainability in current and future reactor fuel cycle systems, operational aspects of the current uranium production cycle including exploration for raw materials for the nuclear fuel cycle. This involves bringing together international experts in various fields related to the work for meetings, to produce publications of value to the IAEA's Member States, and for the maintenance of information and databases on the abundance and distribution of these resources, and to develop technical aspect of capacity building programmes.

Role

The Team Leader is\: (1) a leader, planning the work of the subprogramme on uranium resources and processing, leading a small group of professional staff carrying out these activities and coordinating the activities of the subprogramme with Member States' needs; (2) a scientific secretary to international scientific meetings; (3) a substantive expert, implementing technical cooperation projects in the area of nuclear raw materials; and (4) a facilitator, cooperating with other organizations and with other divisions/departments in the IAEA dealing with similar areas of work.

Functions / Key Results Expected

- Plans, guides, coordinates and monitors the implementation and supervises the activities of the subprogramme on uranium resources and processing in accordance with Member States' needs.
- Prepares, and/or contributes expert inputs to analyses, studies, evaluations, documents and technical reports and fosters the exchange of information in the technical subjects associated with raw materials for the fuel cycle.
- Broadens and deepens knowledge in the field of expertise by organizing and conducting scientific meetings as required to carry out the above responsibilities. He/she provides authoritative advice to Member States on matters relevant to uranium and other raw material resources for the fuel cycle and leads the formulation of related training courses.
- Maintains the high standing and recognition of the IAEA in the scientific community by representing the IAEA at meetings sponsored by national and/or international organizations; establishes and maintains contacts with individual scientists at various centres and in other relevant international organizations, committees and scientific societies.
- Contributes advice and support, as required, to the activities of the Division and of other IAEA units that are relevant to the incumbent's area of expertise.
- Keeps abreast of all developments, trends, technologies and practices relating to exploration and processing for raw materials for the fuel cycle.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

• Master's Degree - An advanced (or equivalent) university degree in mining engineering, economic geology or a similar field.

• A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in the field of uranium resources exploration and processing.
• Experience at the international level.
• Experience working in a national/international nuclear organization or institute desirable.
• Knowledge and practical experience in organizing and conducting scientific and technical meetings.

• Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $85543 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 45851, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
