This position is in the Department of Management, Office of Information and Communication Technology, Enterprise Application Centre, New York, (DM/OICT/EAC-NY). The incumbent reports to a Chief, Application and Application Development Section.

The incumbent is accountable for delivering the required application architecture and integration solutions for searching UN content by utilizing the Solr technology. The incumbent has the role of a Specialist in Application Architecture for Solr search.The incumbent works in collaboration with the web application developers in EAC-NY/OICT and provides services to internal UN clients.

Functional Responsibilities

1. Performs feasibility studies, systems analysis, design, development and implementation of application architecture solutions for searching the content of UN document repositories and websites by utilizing Solr and other related technologies.
2. Implements automated techniques and processes for the bulk and real time indexing in Apache Solr of large-scale data sets residing in database, flat files and other sources.
3. Applies Solr build for generating indexes against structured and semi structured data; writes efficient search queries against Solr indexes using Solr REST/Java API; troubleshoots Solr indexing process and querying engine; develops automated unit test cases for Solr search engine.
4. Configures Solr search for Drupal-based websites for full-text indexing of the attached documents and integrated document repositories
5. Supports all areas concerning Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), integration architecture, service and API design, development, deployment and maintenance, incorporating Enterprise Service Bus, messaging, API gateway and service registry technologies.


Impact of Results  Well-reasoned, innovative approaches and sustainable architecture solutions for searching UN content are very critical for knowledge sharing among UN staff, Member States and public. Developed search solutions save time of UN staff for searching UN document repositories and websites. Support tasks for the Enterprise Service Bus are critical for UN systems integration and data exchange.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education: 

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, information systems, software engineering, mathematics or related field. 
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in development, implementation and maintenance of web-based enterprise systems is required. 
  • Hands on experience in Apache Solr search implementations, integration of Solr with Drupal-based websites and Java programming is required. 
  • Working experience with REST API, JBoss Fuse, Drupal and MariaDB is desirable.  
  • Knowledge of SOA, TOGAF, ISO27000, ITIL and PRINCE2 is desirable.

Language Requirements:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
