What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Role description

The Project Manager will oversee, guide and steer all project activities and monitor closely the progress towards the agreed outcomes. S/he will be in close contact with the ICRC delegations in Yola and Abuja. S/he further constitute the main interface between the project in Adamawa and the primary care department in Geneva, as well as Swiss TPH.

The HPM establishes plans of actions, mobilizes the necessary human and material resources. The HPM monitors and reports on achievements and when necessary, takes all corrective measures to ensure proper objectives’ implementation.

The HPM reports to the Country Health Coordinator, with the support of Geneva Health Unit/Swiss TPH

Main responsibilities

  • Manage and oversees the ALMANACH scaling up project
  • Supervise medical 3 Health Field Officers and 1 Programme Assistant
  • Ensure project progress together with the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency and Swiss TPH, including updated recommendations for mitigating risks.
  • Lead on the policy dialogue with key stakeholders
  • Co-ordinate project related activities with the other partners
  • Collaborate with local professional groups and other relevant health projects
  • Contribute to establish regular and bi-annual progress reports and ensure communication with HQ
  • Ensure the implementation of a robust Monitoring & Evaluation system, in line with logical framework
  • Assure availability of adequate media and communication material to promote the project
  • Manage all partnership relations
  • Ensure the correct administration of fiduciary funds allocated to the ALMANACH project

Desired profile and skills

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
  • Able to work under pressure in a potentially dangerous environment
  • Advanced studies in Public Health (MPH)
  • Degree in project management and/or public health  and/or other training of interest for humanitarian program, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in humanitarian actions
  • Working experience in Africa in development/long term projects (e.g. bilateral cooperation)
  • Knowledge of tropical health, child health
  • Solid experience in humanitarian project management
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven experience in project representation and negotiation
  • Computer proficiency

Your assets

  • Bachelor in medicine or nursing (for nursing, degree course of minimum 3 years)
  • Registered physician or nurse with a valid license to practice in his/her own country of residence
  • French, Arabic, Spanish or Russian, as a second language, with good verbal and written communication skills
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity
  • Previous experience(s) within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Candidates must possess a driving licence (for manual transmission vehicles) with practice
  • Candidates must be prepared to accept an unaccompanied posting
