World Food Programme

Partnerships & Advocacy Intern

Purchase for Progress Coordination

April – August 2018 (5 months)

The mission of WFP is to end global hunger. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

In emergencies, WFP gets food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After an emergency, WFP uses food to help communities rebuild their shattered lives. Present in nearly 80 countries, the organization has the global footprint, deep field presence and local knowledge and relationships necessary to provide access to nutritious food and contribute to the lasting solutions, especially in many of the world’s most remote and fragile areas.

With the launch of Purchase for Progress (P4P) in 2008, the World Food Programme (WFP) began exploring ways of using its food purchases to help develop staple crop markets and spur improvements in smallholder agriculture. The recently ratified Sustainable Development Goals identify support to smallholder farmers and agricultural markets as a critical element of ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture. In the past years, WFP’s unique added value to global efforts to support smallholder farmers has become increasingly clear. Building on the lessons learned through the P4P pilot, WFP is increasingly supporting smallholder farmers through a variety of initiatives.

Currently, WFP is strengthening these efforts as P4P strengthens its role as a policy, programme and technical hub of WFP to leverage its strong knowledge base on smallholder market support. P4P will lead efforts to strengthen and expand the approach, ensuring WFP’s ability to deliver upon goals set forth in the Strategic Plan (2017-2021).
