Background

Under the guidance and supervision of the Programme Coordinator, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to the UNDP Ethiopia Country Office based in Gambella and other high-ranking UN officials and visitors ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
 
Upon request of the supervisor, the Driver can be also required to provide driving services to the project staff, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission. The Driver is expected to fully adhere to and keep abreast with standing UNDP guidelines and policies concerning drivers’ roles and responsibilities as stipulated in the Programme and Operations Policies and Procedures (POPP) as well as the Inter-Office Implementation Arrangements with regard to the roles and responsibilities of the drivers, and any other instructions to be provided by the supervisor.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provision of reliable and secure driving services to the CO and the project staff in Gambella region: 
  • Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services to the CO and the project staff by.
    • driving office vehicles for the transport of UNDP staff, other high-ranking officials and visitors and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items, and 
    • meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport including visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.
2. Proper use of vehicle:
  • Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
3. Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle:
  • Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc.
4. Availability of documents/supplies: 
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts as well as others as required in line with the UN Security Management Policy and Country MOSS, in the assigned vehicle.
5. Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents:
  • Ensures that the local traffic rules as well as the UN code of conduct are fully adhered to.

Competencies

Operational Effectiveness:
  • Ability to perform a variety of repetitive and routine tasks and duties;
  • Good knowledge of administrative rules and regulation;
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of computerized business machine and office equipment in order to provide efficient delivery of service;
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair (for Drivers);
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of protocol (for Drivers);
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of security issues (for Drivers).
Managing documents, correspondence and reports:
  • Creates, edits and presents information (queries, reports, documents) in visually pleasing, clear and presentable formats such as tables, forms, presentations, briefing notes/books and reports using advanced word processing and presentation functions and basic database and spreadsheet software;
  • Ability to produce accurate and well documented records conforming to the required standard.
Leadership and Self-Management:
  • Focuses on result for the client;
  • Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude;
  • Remains calm, in control and good humored even under pressure;
  • Responds positively to critical feedback and differing points of views.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Secondary Education. Valid Driver’s license.
Experience:
  • 4 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair.
Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in Amharic and English. Knowledge of local language is a plus.
