Background:

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is the frontline humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. On average, WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in over 80 countries.  Around 14,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

ShareTheMeal is the award-winning app by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). With just a few taps on their smartphones, users can donate as little as US $0.50 (the global average cost to feed a child) and feed a child for one day.

Since our global launch in November 2015, over 21 million meals have been shared by more than 1 million users worldwide. ShareTheMeal has won several awards including Google I/O Best Social Impact, a SXSW Award and a GSMA award at Mobile World Congress. We are part of Google's "Best Apps of 2016"​ and Editor's choice. ShareTheMeal is often mentioned by many of the major media outlets including CNN, Al Jazeera and The Guardian.

The ShareTheMeal Intern is expected to:

  • Assist with further developing the go-to-market strategy and drive execution (ranging from strategy definition to partnership identification, etc.);
  • Replying to users' comments and tickets, helping to identify trends, process bugs and refine communications tactics;
  • Create, monitor and analyse our existing campaigns and test out new channels including Facebook Ads, Google Adwords;
  • A/B test ad variations and optimize accordingly, refine target audiences and segments to increase our advertising ROI;
  • Create content for our social media channels, handle community management activities for all in-app teams;
  • Support on ad hoc tasks (e.g. research relevant awards and conferences).

Essential requirements:

  • Currently enrolled inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months, preferably in the areas of communications, innovation, marketing, international relations or related studies;
  • University course attendance in the last 12 months;
  • Ability to produce high-quality written materials, write clearly and concisely and work within tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), social media and online communication
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English is required; German is desirable and an additional UN language would be an asset
  • Having completed at least two years of undergraduate study and 1-2 internships, international experience is a plus
  • Interest in social impact projects and non-profits
  • Prior experience in communications, marketing, advertising, non-profit or building businesses is a plus
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines

Skills and abilities:

  • Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy
  • Capacity to work within branding and technical specifications
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy
  • Understanding of issues in Humanitarian and Development aid, including fundraising and innovation
  • Graphic design and/or video editing skills are an advantage
  • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme
  • You take initiative, you see something that needs improvement and you take action
  • You thrive in a startup environment

Terms and conditions:

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment. The current amount for Berlin is approximately $800.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, travel to and from WFP internship location, necessary visas and costs related.
  • Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
