Background

The United Nations Resident Coordinator´s Office (UNRCO) in Mozambique is offering to talented university graduates the opportunity of a short-term internship in Maputo, Mozambique.

The internship is designed to complement the candidate’s academic interest in international development studies, with practical experience in the day-to-day coordination of development cooperation activities including advocacy, program development, reporting and/or evaluation based on the  2030 agenda.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the SDG Social Mobilization Officer the intern may be asked to contribute to the following activities:

  • Assist with data for research work of the office;
  • Retrieve statistical data from internal and external sources and assist in knowledge management;
  • Provide support to the maintenance of UN Mozambique Facebook page;
  • Translate documents, presentations, news articles and press releases into English-Portuguese (and vice-versa);
  • Assist in gathering news articles related to the UN work in Mozambique;
  • Assist in gathering documents related to ongoing joint UN programmes;
  • Support in the organization of events;
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to UN coordination team;
  • Day to day support as needed;
  • Assist in conceptualizing, backstopping and monitoring implementation of activities with key partners in the context of the SDGs;
  • Support the preparation of tailored information for advocacy focusing on civil society engagement.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements in Social Science, Communication, or related areas:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) relevant to the internship;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) also in a relevant area for the internship program;
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience

  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and the UNDP Statement of Purpose;
  • Expected to demonstrate a keen interest in the field of development.

Language

  • Fluency in English and Portuguese is required.

Conditions

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of:

  • The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or
  • The intern, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence through private sources.

Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.

Applicants for internships must show proof of valid medical insurance for Mozambique. For applicants which are neither nationals or residents of the duty station, the insurance must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship duration which:

  • Requires transportation to the home country or country of residence for further treatment;
  • Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the home country, or country of residence.
