UNiTE Campaign Consultant

Background

In February 2008, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the global campaign: UNiTE to End Violence against Women. The campaign calls upon governments, civil society, the private sector, the media and the United Nations System itself to work together to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world. The campaign was due to end in 2015, but due to its global profile and success in mass mobilization, it was extended and has now been taken up by the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.  

The UNiTE campaign is seeking a consultant who will work closely with the UNiTE Campaign Manager to support all activities of the UNiTE Campaign including those surrounding the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the global coordination of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in 2018. The consultant will support development of new package of campaign materials which will be developed to support the work of the UN system under the new Action Plan of the campaign at national level.

Duties and Responsibilities

The UNiTE Campaign Consultant will perform all ongoing tasks in support of the implementation of the UNiTE Campaign, and during this time will:

  • Develop and implement the Campaign’s monthly Orange Day Action Plans for 2018 in consultation with UN Women Country, Multi Country and Regional offices, ensuring consistency with campaigning standards and ethics;
  • Develop required UNiTE Campaign documents and project manage the production of advocacy materials for internal and external use, ensuring all products are coherent with the UNiTE campaign action plans for 2018, aligned with campaigning standards and ethics, and consistent with the UNiTE branding;
  • Support the development of, and coordinate global campaign activities while liaising with regional UNiTE secretariats and relevant focal points, UN Agencies and external partners and networks to contribute to the maximum impact of the campaign worldwide, promote alignment in the campaigning calendar, and coordinate priority initiatives in a strategic way;
  • Work closely with the UN Women Communications team in line with overall strategic direction of the Campaign;
  • Receive and respond to all emailed requests for information from UNiTE regional focal points, UN field offices, UN agency partners, civil society and all external partners regarding updates to the UNiTE campaign ahead of the 16 Days;
  • Coordinate overall planning, logistics and a full implementation of the United Nations Official Commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Required Skills and Experience

  • An advanced level university degree in communications, international relations, humanities, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in communications, advocacy and partnership development.
  • Solid understanding of the role of communications in campaigning for a purpose of achieving a specific change.
  • Extensive experience in efficiently coordinating flow of information and bringing together people from different departments and units, building and developing successful projects involving multinational and remote teams while setting clear work goals, monitoring progress, managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines and adjusting priorities.
  • Solid knowledge of and commitment to the issue of violence against women and girls.
  • Ability to participate effectively in a team-based, information-sharing environment, to collaborate and cooperate with others.
  • Demonstrated capacity to perform independently and effectively within a multicultural work environment, tact and ability to deal with confidential matters in a discreet and reliable manner.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and excellent organizational and coordination skills.

  • Excellent analytical skills of substantive as well as organizational issues.
  • Capacity to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks on time.
  • Experience in producing, editing and uploading content for websites, including audio-visual and non-text based materials and maintaining social media accounts.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of and experience with MS Office suite, use.
