OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To support high-burden countries to ensure evidence-based policies and strategies are in place to achieve universal access to high quality health services for MNCAH, and increase coverage and quality of effective interventions among pregnant women, newborns, children and adolescents, and to create mechanisms to measure the impact of those strategies.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

- Leads and coordinates the ongoing research activities focused on improving pneumonia case management and especially Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM).

- Leads and manages the Implementation Science activities focused on scaling up proven technical interventions.

- Leads and supports other research priorities as required.

- Uses evidence to develop norms and standards in relation to the technical areas of responsibility with a focus on pneumonia and sepsis.

- Ensuresthe establishment, developmentand review ofexisting guidelines to incorporate new research findings and knowledge and ensure guidelines are up-to-date with the latest technical information.

- Identifies and buildspartnerships with newleading experts from within and outside WHO to identify research priorities and strategiesto guide future investments in child health research.

- Develops strategic approaches to translate research into policy and programmes. 

- Strengthens partnerships and collaborates with WHO Regional and Country staff as requested.

- Collaborates with Member States and partners in communicating technical guidance,norms, and standards and forming a consensus on technical approaches and joint actions for improving child health.Performs all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: A first university degree in medicine from a recognized university with postgraduate degree in paediatrics.
Desirable\: Doctoral degree in epidemiology, monitoring or evaluation. Training in research methods. Postgraduate training in epidemiology, nutrition, or public health.

Experience

Essential\: A minimum of ten years national and international working experience in the management of research and development of clinical guidelines at the international level and experience promoting the improvement of the management of childhood infectious diseases in low-income, resource poor countries. Experience in designing and implementing studies on childhood illnesses; with experience conducting both clinical trials and implementation science activities. Proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in the clinical practice of paediatrics.
Desirable\: Experience conducting epidemiologic research (descriptive cohorts).

Skills

Ability to identify priority issues for improving child health with a focus on paediatric pneumonia and sepsis. Ability and willingness to maintain close contacts with Member States, research partners, and associated funding agencies on matters related to the development, implementation, and dissemination of the technical agenda described above. Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with international and national staff at all levels. Ability to manage research projects, develop guidelines, produce documents and reports for dissemination. Ability to present clearly in oral and written presentations.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 85,543 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 6031 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
