Background

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Communication/Public Information National Officer, the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Contribute to planning of informational campaigns, partnerships, exhibitions, conferences, social events and projects to promote a better understanding of UNHCR's activities and accomplishments by the general public and/or targeted audiences;
  • Establish close working relationships with TV, radio and news agencies to promote and disseminate UNHCR’s mandate, goals, activities and principles;
  • Assist in the preparation of interviews and media briefings;
  • Suggest stories and topics about UNHCR projects and activities for the media to cover;
  • Brief and coordinate the work of photographers, designers and videographers commissioned by UNHCR;
  • Draft press releases, reports, booklets and other publications for target audiences;
  • Organize and participate in press trips, briefing of journalists as well as press conferences of UNHCR officials and partners;
  • Assist in preparation of communication budget;
  • Maintain and update media database;
  • Perform other relevant duties as required by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Output:

  • Effective support with organizing media events,  public information projects and campaigns provided.
  • Issues concerning UNHCR persons of concern are reflected at the UNHCR local website and social media platforms, as well as covered by local media
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Competencies

  • A university degree in Social Sciences, Languages, Humanities or Journalism.
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in communication or PR
  • Fluency in Ukrainian, Russian and English

Required Skills and Experience

  • Good knowledge of media landscape, political and humantian environment
  • Highly developed drafting skills in Ukrainian and English
  • Good knowledge of social media platforms and tools
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS office applications.
  • Strong interpersonal  and presentation skills.
  • Analytical thinking
  • Applicant must be 22 y.o. or older
  • Applicant must be a citizen of Ukraine or legally resident in Ukraine including work permit
