Background

UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP has been supporting the Nepalese people in their struggle against poverty since it opened an in-country office in 1963.

The Country Programme Document (2018- 2022) of UNDP is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and Nepal's 14th Development Plan. In total there are 12 outputs under 3 outcomes contributing to an inclusive economic growth, governance, rule of law, resilience building and reconstruction. Promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, social inclusion and environment sustainability are intrinsic to UNDP’s development approach and in delivering CPD.

UNDP in Nepal has a mandate of promoting an inclusive and democratic governance to deliver an effective and equitable public services and establish peaceful society with a strong social cohesion. UNDP’s current work in this area spans from support to rule of law and human rights, elections, public administration reform, parliamentary support and strengthening the sub-national governance in the new federal context. Issues of an inclusive representation, effective accountability, efficient service delivery and responsive planning and monitoring at the local level are at the core of governance programming in Nepal.

UNDP works in collaboration with governments, civil society organizations, constructional bodies, UN agencies, development partners and other stakeholders at national as well as sub-national levels. It   has a strong field presence through its field offices, projects and programmes.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Intern will work as part of the Governance and Rule of Law team. S/he will be responsible to provide programmatic assistance to the Unit team in planning, coordination and implementation of programmes and projects.

The Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Country Director, Governance and Rule of Law, and in close coordination with members of the team as well as with the members of other team, as required.

Scope of Work:

Programme Support:

  • Finalize the mapping of UNDP interventions supporting the local and provincial governments and identify areas to strengthen synergy among different projects;
  • Assist UNDP in identifying new and innovative partnership mechanisms;
  • Support field offices in report preparation and compilation;
  • Participate in meetings and workshops and prepare minutes and proceedings with clear follow-up actions.

Waste Management:

  • Facilitate mapping of the key stakeholders, including UN agencies, Government, civil society organizations and development partners working in the area of waste management;
  • Document key government and UN policies on waste management, including the treaties;
  • List down what other country offices of UNDP are doing in this area and what could be introduced in Nepal;
  • Taking into consideration UNDP’s comparative advantage, identify potential areas of support UNDP could offer to the Government of Nepal and sub-national governments on waste management;
  • Support UNDP in documentation and reporting on Health Post Reconstruction project currently being implemented in Nuwakot District in collaboration with the Government and KOICA.

Deliverables:

  • Report mapping of UNDP’s support package to the provincial and local governments;
  • Concept paper on waste management;
  • Final report with compilation of all assignments undertaken during the internship period.

Required Skills and Experience

Educations:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;

Languages:

  • Strong command of written and spoken Nepali and English languages.

Skills:

  • Knowledge in conducting research;
  • Excellent communication skills.
