UN VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT AZER000020--UNICEF Youth Advocate for Technology, Youth, and Innovation The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long- established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.

Living Conditions

Situated in a strategic place, Azerbaijan shares borders with Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran and the East of the country is bound by a length of the Caspian Sea coastline. In addition, the small exclave of Nakhchivan (only accessible by airplane) is surrounded by Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. Baku is located 28 meters below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world. Security in Azerbaijan is fairly calm. There are no threats from armed conflict or terrorism. The level of serious crime in Baku is low. The winter season brings some snow, particularly in the northern mountains and summers are relatively hot and humid in the capital. Baku has a subway train system and also public buses which are safe to be used. There are many taxi companies operating, several of which have been assessed and approved by the UNDSS. The security level by the UN Department of Safety and Security is minimal (level 1) in Baku.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. Task description

Under the direct the supervision of the Child Rights Systems Monitoring Specialist the UN Volunteer will:

Support in doing a programming review and technology analysis to make recommendations on new features, programmatic development, and opportunities for innovative solutions to support children and adolescent development;

Assist in mapping the innovation technology landscape for child and youth based solutions and collaboration partners for strategic partnerships with UNICEF innovations;

Assist in mapping & identify the leading technology platforms enabling communication for social changes, real-time monitoring, and youth participation;

Support in developing a plan and coordination of programmes on innovation and using modern technologies to achieve programme results;

Support digital safety from child and youth perspective & participation research;

Document and consolidate lessons learned, best practices, case studies, case stories, testimonials in written, picture and video form of the learning journey together with other un Volunteers.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerismby reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNVactivities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms ofvolunteerism in the host country- Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they areundertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNVpublications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, orencourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV OnlineVolunteering service whenever technically possible. Results/Expected Outputs

Strategic report and recommendations on keeping reports up to date for youth trends in technology & innovations; Mapping report on child and youth technology landscape for governance produced;

Partnership and collaboration mapping report & engagement plan for key technology partners;

An office internal innovation strategy and work plan;

At least 2-3 new initiatives on using digital and new technology to support achieving programme results;

Initiative of a project on digital safety;

Lessons learned and best practices are shared with other UN Volunteers in the regional project;

Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment;

A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Conditions of Service:

11 Apr 2018 Page 3 of 4 The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance

from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost

of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included ) and final repatriation (if applicable).

Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential

(WBD) on a monthly basis will be provided.
