UN VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT SDNR000171--UNICEF Youth Advocate for Child Protection The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long- established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.

Living Conditions

the volunteers will be based in various field locations, i.e. Ad Damazine, El Fula, El Fasher. Darfur is the western-most region of Sudan. The region’s main towns are El Fasher, Nyala, and Geneina. The region has been in a state of humanitarian emergency since 2003. This environment requires a mature level of cultural awareness. The security situation within Darfur is unpredictable, though moderately calm in most areas. Risks to personnel are reduced by strict adherence to UN security guidelines, instructions and migrating measures. Crime rate, though not alarming, gives some cause for concern. It is mandatory for all personnel to receive a security briefing upon arrival. The cost of living in Darfur is relatedly reasonable. The markets and shops are generally stocked with local and common cereals, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish and other common food items. These markets are easily accessible. Local restaurants hardly serve well-known non-local recipes. Telecommunications are appreciably reliable in Darfur. There are three main international telecommunications companies in Darfur which provide mobile phone, internet and other telecom 12 Apr 2018 Page 1 of 5 services. Kadugli is the capital of South Kordofan. It is located in the south-west of the state. Kadugli is a small city surrounded by the Nuba Mountains. It is home to a diverse range of cultures and languages, although Arabic is the official language. Kadugli has three

climate seasons: winter, summer and autumn. Winter runs from November to January. Temperature s are warm temperate to cool temperature. In summer, from February to April, temperature increases to 45 degree. Autumn, from May to October, is considered the longest season in the area. Temperature usually drops to 20 degree and it rains. The security situation in Kadugli is unpredictable, although last few months were calm. UN staff are required adherence to UN security guidelines, instructions and mitigating measures. The average living cost in Kadguli is reasonable ad depends on individual life style. Markets open mainly from 8 am to 7 pm while the shops usually open early morning up to midnight. Fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and other common food items are available. There is a limited number of restaurants and entertainment places. Telecommunication services from Zain, Sudani and MTN are working well.

Organizational Context & Project Description

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNV Focus Area Securing access to basic social services

Task description

Under the guidance of the Chief of Child Protection and the direct supervision of Child Protection Specialist the UN Youth Volunteer will:

Support strengthening the child protection system interventions with more focus on adolescents.

Contribute to the implementation of protection related peacebuilding activities: access to justice of for children and young people enhanced; children and young people are empowered for to raise and address child protection issues and related peacebuilding and conflict resolution by skills and resources development; children and young people become agents of change. Assist with the undertaking of capacity-building activities for partners and create knowledge management; Support innovative research with children and young people, including vulnerable child and adolescent’s participation in enhancing their protection as a part of the peace building initiatives etc.;

Undertake frequent monitoring visits to project sites and report on any delays or changes;

Contribute to resource mobilization activities, draft reports, project proposals, TORs, advocacy materials and other relevant documents if required;

Support other programme activities related to child protection as required by the supervisor.

UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the impact of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;

Build relationships with a wide range of Youth Organizations, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to support and/or participate in community-driven voluntary activities; reflect on the type and quality of 12 Apr 2018 Page 2 of 5 voluntary action that they are undertaking; raise awareness in communities that will increase knowledge of issues pertaining to the UNV programme’s mandate and tis role in supporting the Mission mandate;

Encourage, mobilize and support co-workers and fellow UN Volunteers to better understand the connections between the

UNV programme’s engagement within the Mission and voluntary action;

Contribute articles/write-ups/stories on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press

releases, etc.;

Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to

use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerismby

reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNVactivities (for instance in events that mark International

Volunteer Day)- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms ofvolunteerism in the host country- Reflect on the type

and quality of voluntary action that they areundertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities- Contribute

articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNVpublications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.- Assist with

the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering,

orencourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV OnlineVolunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Outputs

UNICEF field interventions related to child and young people protection, their access to justice and social services, promotion

of non-violent behavior of children and young people as well as child and young people participation in addressing protection

related concerns within local governance are duly monitored and are on track with regard to the programme progress

milestones and indicators;

UNICEF Child Protection programme best experiences and achievements are well documented and shared with the partners,

donors and wider public

A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the

number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

• The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including

supervising) national staff or (non-) governmental counter-parts, including Implementing Partners (IPs); • Age, Gender and Diversity

(AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final

statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development dur-ing the assignment, such as reporting on the

number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

Conditions of Service:

The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and

satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

A UN Volunteer receives a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) per month and is paid at the end of each month to cover housing, utilities,

transportation, communications and other basic needs. The VLA can be computed by applying the Post-Adjustment Multiplier (PAM) to

the VLA base rate of (choose from the drop down menu the appropriate rate here): US$1,282. The VLA base rate is a global rate, while

the PAM is country-specific and fluctuates on a monthly basis according to the cost of living. This method ensures that international UN

Volunteers have comparable purchasing power at all duty stations irrespective of varying costs of living. The PAM is established by the

International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) and is published at the beginning of every month on the ICSC website http://icsc.un.org .

12 Apr 2018 Page 4 of 5 In non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, international UN Volunteers receive a Well-Being Differential (WBD) on a monthly basis.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are provided a settling-in-grant (SIG) at the start of the assignment (if the volunteer did not reside in the

duty station for at least 6 months prior to taking up the assignment) and also in the event of a permanent reassignment to another duty

station.

UNV provides life, health, permanent disability insurances as well as assignment travel, annual leave, full integration in the UN security

framework (including residential security reimbursements).

UN Volunteers are paid Daily Subsistence Allowance at the UN rate for official travels, flight tickets for the final repatriation travel (if

applicable). A resettlement allowance is paid for satisfactory service at the end of the assignment.

UNV will provide, together with the offer of assignment, a copy of the Conditions of Service, including Code of conduct, to the successful

candidate.
