SCA Background

The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) has been working in Afghanistan since 1982, presently managing development programmes concerning Health, Education, Rural Livelihoods and Community Governance, with a total annual budget of roughly USD 40 million. The total number of staff is around 5,500. During the last 10 years SCA has undertaken a change process moving from a primarily humanitarian service delivery approach towards more of a developmental role, putting increasing emphasis on capacity development, rights-based programming and outcome orientation. The mission of SCA is to empower individuals, communities and local organizations, primarily in rural areas and with particular focus on women, girls, boys and vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, so that they may participate fully in society and influence their own development. Scope of work:

SCA has an important component within its Rural Development Programme that organizes infrastructure delivery for communities. These infrastructure services include facilities for health and education activities, constructions for improving rural access and irrigation, water supply schemes etc. SCA’s teams follow a manual detailing processes and procedures to be followed for undertaking relevant activities. This manual is in English and needs to be translated into Pashto and Dari. SCA in addition to the manual has other documents that are important in driving processes and procedures of construction activities. These documents will also be subject to proper translation.

Under direct supervision of Construction Coordinator and Rural Development Manager, he/she will be responsible for translation of various construction-program related documents.

Qualification and Work Experience:

• Bachelor Degree in Mass Communication/journalism or English/Pashtu/Dari literature, or Equivalent Degree with full trilingual command.
• 2-3 years’ relevant experience in translation of technical and legal documents is required with contextual and cultural familiarity with NGOs, UN agencies or similar organizations; Experience in Rural Development or with a technical organization is an advantage.
• Fluency in English, Pashto and Dari, both written and spoken,
• Interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability and willingness to travel to the project sites within Afghanistan and adjust to SCA environment.

Main Responsibilities:

• Convert written materials from English to Pashto and Dari, such as books, publications, memos, meeting minutes, guidelines and manuals and ensure that the original and target meaning of the source text is retained.
• Editing/standardization and proof reading of the text accurately taking into consideration proper usage of language, technical terminology and legal expression and ensure clarity and conciseness.
• Consult with experts’/team members in technical areas, retain and develop technical advisor knowledge on technical areas of translation.
• Usage of the standard and appropriate fonts, programmes/software as per programme needs
• Follow up and collecting feedback to the translated version of the documents, outlines, manuals, guidelines with/from RMOs RDP projects, and ensure that the translated material are supplied to the target group.
• Presentation and facilitating an orientation session of the translated version of the document to the relevant team members
