Background Information - Job-specific

UN Electric is a new and UN led long term initiative, focused on electrification projects for foreign aid organizations and fragile and small island states. It is led by UN Environment and UNOPS and is composed of a single central joint unit and multiple UNOPS led country projects and programmes, in line with the UN Environment and UNOPS corporate structure. UN Electric has two tightly interlinked and very specific goals and work programmes:

  • Utility Upgrading the electrical power supplies for the thousands of off-grid facilities currently operated by the UN, NGOs and foreign missions (collectively called foreign aid organizations) in over 40 countries.
  • Expertise Supporting developing countries that host off-grid facilities in both the development and financing of modern electricity supply infrastructure projects and an associated local supply chain and skilled workforce.

Upgrading in this specific context entails moving from expensive, inefficient and polluting diesel generators to lower cost, higher efficiency and cleaner renewable energy and hybrid-based systems.



Functional Responsibilities

The Senior Engineer will lead the technical team within the central unit of UN Electric. The first project that the technical team will support is UN Electric Haiti I. Other projects will be developed in parallel with the support of the team. At the same time, the team will develop the system level technical foundations of UN Electric. In this context, the Senior Engineer assignment has four components:
a) UN Electric Haiti technical leadership,
b) new project development,
c) platform development,
d) team management.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • Advanced University Degree (Master's or equivalent) is required. Preferably in Aeronautical, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant discipline.
  • University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience

  • Between 7 and 9 years’ technical experience (or more depending on academic credentials) in all aspects of electrical/and or mechanical engineering projects in the energy sector.
  • Experience in engineering project management and the leadership of engineering and technical teams is highly desirable
  • Experience in applied engineering research and technical development and the writing of technical reports is highly desirable
  • Experience in solar PV grid connected and off-grid power supply systems and associated metering and monitoring technology is required
  • Experience in fieldwork in remote sites, fragile states and post conflict settings is required
  • Experience within the UN is desirable

Language Excellent command in oral and written of English and French is required, additional languages will be consider an asset.

Contract type, level and duration

Contract type:International Individual Contract Agreement (IICA) Regular / Monthly: This contract is a regular monthly contract, which requires ongoing services during the term of the contract and payments will be made at the end of each month. 

Contract level: IICA3

Contract duration: 12 month full time with the potential for extension based on good performance and availability of funds
