What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the post

Contribute to raising funds needed for the overall financing of the organization in line with the ICRC Funding Strategy 2012-2020, and support the longer term Private Sector and National Society (NS) engagement led by the Resource Mobilization (REM) division.
 

  • In coordination with the Regional Head of Unit and relevant managers, handle the overall relationship with the governments and National Societies as well as donors from the private sector, including partnerships and the related reporting of the following countries: Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Monaco, Spain, Italy, The Holy Sea, San Marino, Austria, Andorra, Cyprus, Greece, Portugal and Malta.
  • In consultation with the Regional Head of Unit, relevant managers and the Foresight Team, acts as the focal point for the Unit’s engagement with the private sector including market development, and advise on private donors’ perspectives and general fundraising issues.
  • Contribute in the overall reflection and strategy building of the Unit, as well as in the analysis of the donor countries' potential and in pursuing new funding opportunities.

Main duties and responsibilities

For the countries and national societies under his/her responsibility:

  • Support the REM Regional Head in defining the ICRC’s overarching fundraising strategy for the relevant countries
  • Act as interface between the ICRC and donors, ensure that the ICRC capitalizes on the links between government, private and National Society donors (The virtuous circle)
  • Maintain and if possible increase contribution levels and partnerships in an open dialogue with the governments (innovation, private sector) and NS (joint fundraising campaigns, etc.) and craft funding proposals on the basis of the ICRC’s appeals and updates
  • Help National Societies mobilize resources (from government and private sources) to support the ICRC
  • Conduct or facilitate fundraising visits to respective capitals, participate in donor events as the « face of the ICRC », including social events
  • Identify new funding opportunities with new donors or untapped budget lines
  • Develop narrative and provide customized service according to interest and needs of the donor
  • Mobilize hierarchy and REM colleagues (in particular from the foresight and enabler pillars) to implement strategy and achieve goals
  • Monitors the private fundraising market potentials, trends and support the Unit’s market approach.
  • Develops, deepens and coordinates the existing working relationship and mobilises contributions from governments, NS and private sources in order to create virtuous circles amongst these three donor communities by following best practices.
  • Timely follow-up of governments and private donors’ requests and proactively contribute to the identification of opportunities for donor communication/promotional documents (i.e. updates or special reports, high level visits, Permanent Mission meetings and missions, etc.).
  • Ensure the follow-up of each contribution from registration to reporting (financial and narrative, audit) and filing according to REM administrative guidelines. Monitor deadlines for submissions and reporting.

Education and experience required

  • 5  years professional experience
  • Confirmed experience in private fundraising required
  • University degree required (BA and/or MA) preferably in social science, business administration
  • Field experience with the ICRC or a National Red Cross society a strong asset
  • Experience of the functioning of the humanitarian and/or development communities.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian work
  • Knowledge of the Movement an asset
  • Understanding of ICRC operations, practices and policies
  • Mastery of English and French required, working knowledge of another European language an asset
  • Computer proficiency
