EIB Posting

The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking for its General Secretariat Directorate - Economics Department

at its headquarters in Luxembourg:

INTERN

Duration: 6 months (fixed start date: 1st September 2018)

Please note that, as marked on our Webpage, only applications from nationals of the Member States of the European Union, as well as citizens from countries with which EU accession negotiations have started, can be considered (Turkey, Serbia and Montenegro).

Please note that you are requested to limit your applications to a maximum of three traineeship publications. We will only consider and retain the first three applications submitted.

Objective of the traineeship

The objective of your traineeship is twofold. The Economics department will benefit from your knowledge and your technical skills in tasks that are very labour-intensive and require substantial specialised knowledge that is typical for Ph.D. candidates in economics. You will benefit from working in an international financial institution, thereby gaining work experience, insights into policy analysis in practice, establishing professional contacts and gaining knowledge of the functioning of the EIB.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the economists in charge, you will carry out work related to the preparation of a publication on investment and investment finance and the presentation of the results of the EIB Investment Survey. Your main tasks will be to:

  • Manage very large datasets, extract and provide data for statistical analysis;
  • Provide basic statistics, charts, tables and short reports based on their data work;
  • Co-operate with EIB economists in building statistical models for data analysis;
  • Co-operate and assist EIB economists in analysing the results from the statistical analysis, providing economic rationale and drawing policy conclusions.;
  • Draft short summaries of existing theoretical and empirical academic research relevant to the publication.

Academic qualifications and professional skills

  • Final year of studies or University degree (PhD) an Economic discipline. Candidates with an advanced master degree in economics, and not pursuing a Ph.D., can also be considered, provided their research interests are closely related to the special topic of the publication;
  • Good understanding of economic theory and statistical methods for empirical analysis. Some specialisation in empirical analysis is necessary.
  • Very good capacity to handle data and to elaborate statistical and economic analysis. Ability to work with STATA, SAS or R software for statistical analysis is essential.
  • Previous experience with large datasets such as Orbis is seen as an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and/or French. Knowledge of other languages would be an advantage.

Competencies

  • Achievement Drive: continually keeps an eye on performance, focusing on improving it, showing drive and determination to meet short and long-term goals.
  • Change Orientation: adapts to differences and changes in the environment; takes a flexible approach to reach outcomes.
  • Collaboration: works cooperatively as part of a team; works collaboratively with peers across organisational boundaries based on a genuine interest in and an accurate understanding of others and their individual perspectives and concerns.
  • Organisational Commitment: is willing to commit to an organisation whose mission is to support Europe and is open to diversity, and to align her/his own behaviour with the organisation’s needs and intrinsic values, acting  with integrity in ways that promote the organisation’s mission, policies and rules.

Please note that deadline for application is the 27/05/2018.
