Background Information - Job-specific

Haiti has been selected as one of the first countries for rollout of the UN Electric model. The first freestanding project to be implemented under the model will be UN Electric Haiti I.  This project has been developed through a revision of an existing UN Environment managed project: Haiti Sustainable Energy II and focuses mainly on the CEAC mini-grid.

The project will operate within the emerging UN Electric country level framework. It will a) deliver several grant funded subsidized and donated services at the local and national level and b) Implement a small technical trial for the cost-recovery services, c) contribute on a small scale to mobilization of the overall UN Electric initiative, through supporting work on communications and financial and technical tools.

The project will be implemented with both a core UNOPS technical and operational team and several not for profit international and national partners.

Functional Responsibilities

The Numerical Modeler will work within the UN Electric central design team, on Haiti and a range of other projects. The role has two components a) numerical modeling and b) research and project support.

Numerical modelling 60%

  • Support the operation, reviewing and improvement of the following types of numerical models:
  • Electricity production and flow models for mini-grid and autonomous power systems. The models will incorporate a range of technologies including diesel-electric generators, solar PV, small scale wind, micro-hydropower and battery storage.
  • Equipment performance and operating lifetime models for key equipment, including generators, batteries, inverters, solar panels and air conditioning units.
  • Facility and population electricity demand models, based on research of actual mini-grids and sites, component listings and the use of proxies such as occupancy and surface area.
  • Operate project level and system scale financial models developed and supplied by others.

Research and project support 40%

  • Undertake market research of a range of energy technologies to support development of the UN Electric supply chain and to inform specific procurement exercises.
  • Assist and maintain a project and component cost database
  • Write technical reports including customer proposals and techno-economic background.
  • Provide support for conceptual and detailed design of electrical systems for energy infrastructure projects including CAD drawings and energy flow dynamic modeling.
  • Provide project development and management support, with a focus on project planning and budgeting.

Education

An advanced university degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical, aeronautical engineering, computer science or a relevant field is required.
A first level university degree in relevant field with additional two years of relevant experience can be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Experience in the design, development and operation of numerical models for engineering systems and projects is desirable.
Experience working in a United Nations common system field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) in a conflict or post-conflict setting is desirable.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications, MS Project is required. Knowledge of other engineering design software such as PVSyst, HelioScope, Google Sketch-up, Auto CAD, Homer Pro, ETAP is desirable.
