As a senior member of the Advocacy section in UNICEF's Division of Communication, the post holder will lead on youth engagement, developing an ambitious new strategy to engage more young people, amplify their voices, and mobilize them to take action in support of our campaign goals. The post holder will be responsible for the development, oversight and implementation of the strategy, working collaboratively with colleagues across UNICEF at headquarters, country and regional level, as well as with external partners.

As a senior member of the Advocacy section in UNICEF's Division of Communication, the post holder will lead on youth engagement, developing an ambitious new strategy to engage more young people, amplify their voices, and mobilize them to take action in support of our campaign goals. The post holder will be responsible for the development, oversight and implementation of the strategy, working collaboratively with colleagues across UNICEF at headquarters, country and regional level, as well as with external partners.

How can you make a difference?

  • Develop and lead an ambitious strategy to scale up UNICEF engagement of young people in advocacy and campaigning, and drive the implementation of that strategy.
  • Provide strategic inputs to the development and execution of UNICEF's global advocacy and communication priorities, recommending ways to enhance the impact of our campaigns.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of UNICEF's broader supporter engagement strategy.
  • Build a wide network internally, working with key headquarters divisions, regional and country offices, and national committees to ensure a collaborative approach to UNICEF's work with young people.
  • Develop strong partnerships with key external stakeholders whose support is essential to the achievement of our youth engagement objectives.
  • Lead and manage the youth team, providing clear direction and support and ensuring accountability for results.
  • Play a key role as a senior member of the Advocacy section, identifying connections with other advocacy and communication priorities and working collaboratively across the team to capitalize on them.
  • Lead the development of youth-focused advocacy and communication campaigns, including messaging, audience analysis and products.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of key platforms for youth engagement.
  • Oversee the production of advocacy and communication materials, e.g. advocacy briefs, videos, websites, reports, social media assets and others.
    • Regularly liaise with other divisions, country and regional offices, national committees and other partners on youth engagement, advocacy, content development, information exchange and collaborative communication initiatives.
    • Provide monitoring and evaluation updates and reports as needed.
    • Manage and potentially raise sizeable budgets.
    • Support major events as they relate to UNICEF's organizational priorities.

To qualify as a/an [champion or advocate] for every child you will have:

  • Advanced University Degree in Public Policy, Political Science, International Development, Public Administration, International Relations, Journalism, Communications or other related field. OR University Degree with commensurate experience
  • At least eight years of experience in advocacy and campaigns, including at both a global and national level.
  • Experience in leading the development and implementation of global advocacy and campaigns strategies.
  • A strong track record on engaging young people on issues that matter to them and building their capacity to campaign.  An understanding of the latest trends in campaigning with and for young people, including demographical analysis and insight-driven audience segmentation.
  • Experience in developing clear theories of change, with specific, measurable and timebound objectives and performance indicators.
  • Significant experience of managing teams and budgets.
  • Experience working for an advocacy or campaigning organization e.g. international or national NGO, UN or other multilateral organization.  Field experience desirable.  Familiarity with UNICEF's work is a plus
  • Demonstrable experience of forging partnerships with external stakeholders in the youth, advocacy and campaigning space.
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills is a must. Knowledge of an additional UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an asset.
