The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a highly motivated individual with exceptional capacity to analyze existing and emerging business cases and their business models in the interface of sanitation, waste management and agriculture, and to explore options for resource recovery and reuse (RRR) of organic waste, including excreta and wastewater, in urban and peri-urban low-income settings with a regional emphasis on South Asia/India.

Reporting to the Researcher Group Leader – RRR, the incumbent will support the quantitative and qualitative analysis of existing enterprises and projects in the sanitation-agriculture interface to  understand the building blocks of their business models, addressing technical, economic, financial, and institutional limitations and opportunities; and develop scenarios for innovative models and public-private partnerships to increase their replicability, scalability and impact. The position holder will be based at IWMI’s headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, or New Delhi, India.


Depending on the person’s qualification, this will be a regionally or internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport,  education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. The duration of the contract will initially be for a three-year period with possible extension.


We are looking for candidates with a master’s degree (or more) in business development, administration, civil engineering, economy or a related discipline; with 6-10 years of professional work experience in the private sector, or as a social entrepreneur or researcher in the sanitation, energy, fertilizer or waste(water) sectors; a proven record of project management in low-income countries; knowledge of the institutional sanitation and waste management landscape and its donors in South Asia; ability to represent IWMI at national and international events; and the proven ability to write winning proposals, scientific papers and donor reports.
