Position Description

 

Title:    Child Protection Assistant (1 position)

Location: Mokha with regular travel to the field

Start of Contract & Duration:  Contract to start as soon as possible. Contract duration for 6 months with possibility of extension based on funds and performance.

Reports to:  Team Leader

 

 

Background

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. Using a protection of human rights framework, since the beginning of the conflict, DRC has worked in Yemen responding to the protection and assistance needs of IDPs, in collaboration with key national and international protection agencies.

 

Purpose

The Child Protection Assistant, under the supervision of the Team leader, is primarily responsible for supervising child protection activities, and promotes the protection and welfare issues of children affected by the armed conflict – including those of gender-based violence at domestic and community levels. The Child Protection Assistant is responsible for providing a wide variety of community-based awareness sessions, group discussions, home visits and follow ups on cases (i.e., case management) of children affected by the conflict and other vulnerable children including cases of GBV. The Child Protection Assistant ensures proper response and referral of all cases so that children affected by armed conflict and other vulnerable children receive services with a holistic approach.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Implement and monitor Child Protection activities , local NGO partners, and community volunteers who work on child protection and GBV issues at the community level; follow up of identified vulnerable children affected by the conflict and/or other situations who are in need of multidisciplinary support (medical and/or other psychosocial support) and conduct referrals.
  • Undertake regular field visits to conduct child protection and GBV monitoring among conflict-affected populations and IDPs.
  • Identify and work with local communities (including IDPs) to set up service mapping among committees to liaise child protection issues and refer them to the relevant agencies.
  • Contribute to and prepare drafts of child protection monitoring reports.
  • Participate in needs assessments and selection of vulnerable persons of concern for additional humanitarian assistance, income-generating activities, and reintegration projects.
  • Participate in field visits with DRC team and local partners to conduct practical training/capacity building and supervision on child protection monitoring activities by local partners.
  • Contribute to reports on the humanitarian situation of children affected by armed conflict, child protection and GBV related issues.
  • Assist in conducting the activities of mixed migration in south when needed.
  • Any other duties as required by the supervisor.

Personal Specifications

  • University Degree in social sciences, Law, Human Rights, International Law or related field.
  • 2 years of experience working with international NGOs, particularly in the child protection sector;
  • Excellent communication skills and good knowledge of Yemen local context
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of international law and/or human rights principles;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks; proven self-initiative and problem-solving abilities;
  • Excellent written and spoken English is an asset in addition to Oromo.
