The Experiment in International Living has been the leader in international education and experiential learning for high school students for more than 85 years. On our three- and four-week high school study abroad programs to 26 countries, students explore the world through hands-on experiences and homestays in local communities through the lens of a specific theme. Each year, hundreds of students come away from The Experiment with invaluable cultural, leadership, language, and college-prep skills that help them thrive in diverse environments. The Experiment has an immediate opening for an Admissions Officer, who will work with the admissions team to attain enrollment targets for all The Experiment high school programs. The position will report to the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid and will work closely with the Director of Programming and Operations. Compensation for this position will commensurate with experience, there will be opportunities for annual bonuses based on number of inquiries converted to enrolled. The position will be based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

The Admissions Officer is a full-time position that will participate in the recruitment and conversion efforts of The Experiment Admissions team. This person will manage a full pool of students, events, school visits, parent information sessions within an assigned recruiting territory.

Counseling Responsibilities

  • Recruit high school students and host families for The Experiment through presentations at high schools, summer opportunities fairs, parent information evenings, and collaborative work with partner, school or community groups. Promote Experiment group travel (“custom”) programs. This will involve extensive travel: as many as 20 days per month during the 6-month recruiting cycle;
  • Meet or exceed established conversion goal for recruiting enrolled students at events. Research and develop knowledge of assigned recruitment territory to identify new recruitment opportunities and nurture existing ones;
  • Work with marketing and communications team (MARCOM) to develop assigned territory strategies and identify marketing opportunities;
  • Full life cycle management of a pool of applicants. Proactive and holistic student contact and conversion throughout the inquiry, application, and pre-departure processes using the Constituent Relationship Management (CRM-Salesforce) database. Advise prospective students and applicants about admissions policies and procedures;
  • Pre-departure counseling. Assist in the creation of pre-departure materials, disseminate information to students and parents, and assist students through the visa and other pre-departure processes;
  • Planning: Assist with strategic recruitment planning with the goal of increasing awareness of The Experiment amongst prospective students, sending high schools and related mentoring organizations, community groups and sponsors. The Admissions Officer will be responsible for creating and executing a geographic recruitment plan for the assigned territory;
  • Serve as backup to other Experiment admissions officers;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.

Independently Manage Inquiry, Applicant and Student Pools

  • Meet goals for communicating with assigned inquiries and applicants via phone contact and email; Track all communication in the constituent relationship management database;
  • Meet or exceed established goal for converting inquiries to applicants and from applicants to enrolled students;
  • Be able to speak knowledgably about financial aid and scholarship opportunities;
  • Electronically record all contacts in the database and submit regular recruitment reports;
  • In cooperation with department staff and others, evaluate previous recruitment efforts;
  • Assist office staff with answering The Experiment’s general 1-800 line and website chat;
  • Promote diversity in all recruitment and admissions efforts.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field;
  • High level of comfort with technology and an interest in utilizing new technologies to increase efficiency;
  • Experience working with youth and working cross-culturally;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to engage with and present to various stakeholders such as students, parents, teachers and other educators;
  • Demonstrated customer service skills;
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and creatively.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of recruiting, admissions, higher education, or marketing experience;
  • Experience in advising/counseling students;
  • Knowledge of a second language;
  • Familiarity with The Experiment or World Learning programs.
