INTERN - Awareness Raising and Information Management [Temporary]

Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)/UN Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) is for a minimum of two (2) months with the option to extend to a total of six (6) months, depending on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern. The desired starting date for the internship is September 2018.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The intern shall undertake the following duties, which may include, but are not limited to:
•Support the UN-SPIDER Bonn office with drafting and publishing content in the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal.
•Support the UN-SPIDER Bonn office with tasks related to the Global Partnership Using Space-based Technology Applications for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP-STAR) and the International Network for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (IN-MHEWS).
•Support the UN-SPIDER Bonn office with tasks related to the project “Earth-observation-based information products for drought risk reduction at the national level” (EvIDENz).
•Support the Head of Office in communications with institutions and partners.
•Support the Head of Office in the production of public information and awareness-raising material.
•Coordinate with UNOOSA’s Office of the Director on communications and outreach.
•Give a presentation on his/her internship and write an internship report.
•Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

The following skills are desirable:
•Experience in (copy-)editing
•Experience in writing for a broad audience
•Experience in using content management systems (e.g. Drupal)
•Experience in using graphic design tools (i.e. Illustrator, Photoshop) and desktop publishing software (i.e. InDesign).

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Fluency in Spanish or French would be an asset.
