Under the general supervision of the Corporate Alliances Manager (Research) and working directly with the Regional Chief of Partnerships in the Panama Regional Office, the incumbent will be implementing the research work plan including conducting research on companies, foundations and individuals, applying due diligence criteria to qualify potential partnerships, and ensuring robust knowledge management. The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking regular and ad-hoc corporate intelligence work as related to UNICEF corporate engagement in the LAC region.

Partner research and ensued due diligence are integral aspects of UNICEF work towards scoping, prospecting and developing private sector engagements (CE). This area of work, managed for the organization by the Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division (PFP) aims to support UNICEF’s effective engagement with business and private philanthropy entities, while at the same time ensuring that:
a) Interactions with companies are pursued in alignment with the organization’s integrity standards, mandate, and priorities.
b) Decision-making on whether and how to engage is informed by an adequate assessment of the risks and opportunities that engagements may pose to UNICEF, and ultimately to children.
Core to this function is the profiling, reviewing and approval of prospect partners (i.e. companies, foundations and major donors) and risk assessment of activities considered by UNICEF for non-commercial interactions (i.e. funding engagements and co-branded partnerships).
As part of an ongoing effort to strengthen local accountability for partnership risk management, UNICEF Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division (PFP) is seeking a motivated professional that will coordinate the research and due diligence function for the Latin and Central America Region (LACR), carrying out prospect research and clearance for national engagements, and conducting risk assessment for regional partnerships. The position will report to the Research Due Diligence team in Geneva, while sitting in the Regional Support Center for Private Sector engagement (RSCs) in Panama.
How can you make a difference?
Overall objectives of the assignment will include:
- Ensuring that engagements are reflecting UNICEF objectives and priorities, and are in line with existing ethical standards, criteria and policies.
- Ensuring that UNICEF engagement with corporations, foundations and major donors is undertaken with sufficient information on opportunities and potential sensitivities.
- Ensuring that relevant colleagues involved in potential partnerships are equipped with the necessary knowledge to manage potential ethical and reputational risks involved.
- Ensuring that information related to key potential and/or current corporate partners of UNICEF is readily available to relevant colleagues and departments.
Activities include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:
- Coordinate the due diligence process for UNICEF national engagements (funding and non-funding) with companies and potential donors in the Region. Ensure that research and clearance are done in accordance with UNICEF guidelines and policies for working with the Business community.
- Ensure that s corporate research and information on clearance is uploaded on UNICEF online platforms (customer relationship manager systems and other channels).
- Upon request, conduct additional research on potential corporate partners and related issues for use in briefings, meetings, presentations, etc.
- Identify relevant information (from both internal and external sources) on ethical business and sustainability issues and ensure prompt dissemination among corporate due diligence users and other colleagues concerned with CE work.
- Support capacity building exercises across the Region on strategic and risk managed partner prospecting
Specific tasks will include:
- Undertake regular screening and risk assessment of companies and entities considered by UNICEF for potential engagement, preparing reports inclusive of key business intelligence against committed deadlines. Liaise with regional team members as needed, on specific cases.
- Developing insights and making associated decisions related to UNICEF corporate research and due diligence transparently available to all users (via UNICFE customer relationship management system and relevant platforms)
- Liaise with Geneva research and due diligence team on a regular basis to support policy coherence across the teams managing the research and due diligence function.
- Supporting efforts to ensure robust knowledge management, including data quality assurance of the customer relationship management (CRM) database
- Conducting additional research as needed, including on sector trends, for use in briefings, meetings, presentations, etc.

Education and Experience:
- Advanced degree (master's level) and a minimum five years of experience in the development of high quality, polished communication products, preferably in the international development arena is required. A Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, journalism, public relations, or business administration with at least seven years of experience in relevant fields can be considered in lieu of advanced degree.
- Experience with corporate due diligence and evaluation highly preferred.
- Ability to identify strategic issues, opportunities and risks, and communicate broad and compelling organizational direction.
- Direct experience in developing and implementing communication plans and policy guidance/training materials.
- Attention to detail and track record of delivering against objectives.
- Understanding of corporate engagement dimensions within or outside of UNICEF an important asset.
- Understanding of non-profit management and the UN system an asset.
- Familiarity with customer relationship management databases an important asset.
- Computer literacy in standard applications is mandatory (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, etc.).
- Fluency in Spanish and English is required (excellent written and verbal communication skills highly desirable) Ability to capture key points and actions in succinct formats for a variety of audiences is highly desirable. Working knowledge of Portuguese an important asset.
