Organizational Setting
 
FAO's Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa (SFS) is a subsidiary of FAO’s Regional Office for Africa. The principal function of SFS is the overall identification, planning and implementation of FAO’s priority activities based on the needs of the 16 member countries in the sub-region and SADC. SFS supports member states in implementing strategies for addressing priorities related to sub-regional food and nutrition security, agriculture and rural development.  One of the SFS areas of focus is to improve diets and raise levels of nutrition, as well as support with appropriate policies, strategies and methodologies for a nutrition-sensitive agricultural and food systems including work on value chains, market linkages, post-harvest handling and agro-processing. The areas of support include food based dietary guidelines (FBDG), dietary assessments, and effective nutrition promotion programmes.  FAO is committed to supporting SADC Member States in their efforts to improve nutritional outcomes as stated in the Rome Declaration on Nutrition (November 2014) and United Nations Decade of Nutrition Action.  
 
 
The post is home based with travel to five Southern African countries.
 
 
Reporting Lines
 
The FBDG consultant/PSA works under the overall guidance of the SFS Sub Regional Coordinator (SRC) and under the direct supervision of SFS Nutrition Officer.
 
 
Technical Focus
Nutrition promotion programmes for improving healthy food consumption and nutritional outcomes with a focus on FBDGs, dietary assessment, and human nutrient requirements.
 
Tasks and responsibilities
 
The FBDG consultant/PSA will support the development of FBDGs in Tanzania, Seychelles, Zambia and two other countries.
  1. Consolidate and finalize the draft evidence reports that would form the scientific basis of the food based dietary guidelines;
  2. In collaboration with country FBDG Technical Working Groups, draft the FBDGs and Food Guides;
  3. Support the process of field testing of the FBDGs\: (1) pre-testing of FBDGs, messages, and graphics (2) re-adjusting and modifying the guidelines including the graphic illustrations (3) identifying expert firms with expertise in behavioural change promotion. This activity will be carried out in collaboration with the consultants in social anthropology and communications. 
  4. Assist each country in preparing the FBDGs multi-sectorial implementation and evaluation strategy;
 
 
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
 
 
Minimum requirements\:
  • Advanced university in degree in nutrition or dietetics or closely related field.
  • Over four years of relevant experience in human nutrition programming with training and practical experience in nutrition education or health promotion and knowledgeable on food and nutrition security;
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of French or Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian.  (for PSAs only English language is required)

Technical/functional skills\: 
  • Work experience in one or more of the technical fields (i.e. Food Based Dietary guidelines, nutrition education, food consumption, health promotion or nutrition assessment);
  • Relevance of experience in behavioural change material and in message development, pre-testing messages.
  • Previous working experience in the African or in low and middle income countries.
  • Experience in publishing or writing clear and concise scientific papers, policy papers, and guidelines
  • Experience in planning and delivering capacity development training, as well as developing relevant teaching materials;
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written presentation skills in English;
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well within multi-sector and multi-agency working groups
