TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR INTERNSHIP
Organizational Unit: Regional Bureau for Africa, Legal and Policy Unit
Duty station: Geneva Switzerland
Duration of the internship: 2 months
Expected start date: 1 August to 30 September 2018 (2 months)
Background information/Organizational Context
The Legal and Policy Unit is located with the Regional Bureau for Africa. The Unit provides functional protection oversight and policy advice to colleagues at headquarters and at field level. Personnel in the Unit also assist with the designing of comprehensive protection strategies and represent the organization to authorities, UN sister agencies, partners and other stakeholders on matters of protection doctrine and policy specific to the Africa region.
The Year 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa (OAU Refugee Convention) as well as the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the 2009 AU Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention). Related Commemoration events are foreseen.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review the Content of 2009 AU Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa
- Focus on the three sub-articles provided for under Article 10, concerning ¿Displacement Inducted by Projects¿
- Determine the legal issues which are raised by the content of the three sub-articles
- Summarize, in a written report, the legal issues contained
- Prepare a presentation, to be made to Senior Management, which will summarize the findings
- Present the final report
Minimum qualifications required
- In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
- On-going or completed academic study in Law, including International Law
- Advanced knowledge of English, with general competence in French
- Proven Drafting and Presentation Skills
Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
