Background

Located in Geneva, Switzerland, the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, (ECARO) coordinates and supervises UNICEF’s work in 21 countries and entities to support governments to fulfill child rights.   The Regional Office advocates at regional level for investment in children and for children-centred social policies and supports program response and related research in these areas. This includes the development of regional partnerships towards the Sustainable Development Goals including risk-informed programming to protect children from the effects of natural hazards, political and economic instability and conflict.

Amidst an increasing number of emergencies impacting children in the ECA region, the RO Emergency Section is presently strengthening its capacities for more substantial monitoring and early action response for Country Offices including the ongoing emergency responses in Ukraine and Turkey.   This effort includes improving systems and tools, information management and dissemination and real-time monitoring of risk situations, in particular for RO senior management.

Towards meeting these requirements, it is necessary to strengthen the documentation and information management capacities in the Emergency Section for which, a two to three month internship assignment is sought.

Purpose of the internship

The internship is intended to:

  • give the intern an insight into the work of the UNICEF and broader UN family;
  • give the intern the opportunity to work in a multi-cultural international organization;
  • provide the UNICEF RO Emergency Advisor with the able assistance of an outstanding young student specializing in a field related to their own work.

Scope of Work

The internship is full-time, proposed for four months from August to November 2018 with possibility to extend to six months.

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Emergency Chief, the intern will:

  • Support, consolidate and streamline information management mechanisms
  • Prepare analyses and consolidated information presentations
  • Perform other duties, as required.

At the end of the internship, the intern will receive full feedback on the job performed, and upon successful completion of the assigned duties, the intern may request a letter of recommendation.

Education requirements

Social sciences (liberal arts) preferably.  Experience/expertise in the field of information management, communications, statistics or related areas) is an asset;

Language requirements

Fluency in oral and written English is required; working knowledge of Russian is an asset.

Related experience

Applicants:

  • Are not required to have professional work experience but must have the ability to organize their work in an efficient manner and to demonstrate the ability to meet regular targets
  • Should have a good familiarity with Microsoft Office Excel and Google Applications
  • Have skills in the visual presentation of data.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Maintain good working relations (crucial element for this internship) and

Internship Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for an internship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.

Terms of Internship Programme

  • Individuals must have proof of medical insurance covering their time at the duty station.
  • Individuals are responsible for arranging any visa or immigration requirements.
