Background

The Strategic Plan 2018-2021 – and more broadly supporting the achievement of the 2030 Agenda – requires making UNDP a more nimble, innovative and enterprising organization, grounded in a business model that ensures efficient, scalable and cost-effective delivery of services. The Corporate Strategy Advisor is located in the Executive Office and is part of the Strategy and Planning Surge Team that supports the UNDP Administrator in the development and implementation of corporate policies and strategies to deliver the Strategic Plan 2018-2021. The advice, guidance, direction, analysis and coordination provided by the Corporate Strategy Advisor is expected to lead to improved and integrated results according to agreed milestones, ultimately culminating in the improvement of UNDP’s existing corporate policies and strategies or development of new corporate policies and strategies. The corporate priorities and strategies developed support the strategic repositioning of the Organization and enhance organizational effectiveness in key corporate strategy areas. The Corporate Strategy Advisor reports to the Senior Adviser, Strategy and Planning and supports the analysis, development and subsequent implementation of recommendations for UNDP’s future corporate priorities and strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Corporate Strategy Advisor will be responsible for the following functions:

Conceptualization & Implementation of Corporate Strategies 
  • In coordination with the Senior Advisor for Strategy and Planning, the Corporate Strategy Advisor partners with and leads cross-functional internal UNDP teams, empowers individuals and creates excitement for teams to act in developing and implementing corporate policies and strategies to enable effective implementation of the Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinates cross-functional teams on the identification and interpretation of developing trends, events and factors that may impact upon or influence UNDP’s strategies, programmes and activities.
  • Develops advice and recommendations that effectively informs decision-making at the senior management level in line with the Strategic Plan and UNDP’s overall mandate and priorities. 
  • Advises the Administrator on strengthening UNDP’s programmatic value proposition in the context of the UN Development System Reform.
  • Facilitates the articulation and delivery of UNDP signature services at country, regional and global levels. 
  • Promotes the integration of UNDP research and knowledge capabilities into UNDP’s institutional positioning and corporate service offer.
Coordination & Communication Support
  • Establishes effective working relationships with counterparts at all levels in UNDP and manages them effectively to facilitate knowledge sharing and joint work in the development and operationalization of corporate policies and strategies for UNDP.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with counterparts in other UN System agencies, funds and programmes, and with bilateral and multilateral partners to facilitate knowledge sharing and effective coordination of joint strategic initiatives in support of more coherent system-wide responses to the 2030 Agenda within the UN System.
  • Advocates for broad communication and outreach policies that promote compliance with UNDP’s mandate, accountability and reporting requirements.
Knowledge Management & Partnerships
  • Keeps abreast of global UNDP knowledge management extraction, analysis, documentation, codification of results and lessons learned that can inform corporate strategies and policies.
  • Jointly reviews existing UNDP knowledge platforms to identify gaps, connect those gaps to the aspirations of the Strategic Plan and use them to advocate for UNDP needs when cultivating and building new partnerships with public and private partners that help UNDP deliver on the Strategic Plan.
  • Participates in knowledge management and practice networks as appropriate.
Representational Activities
  • Represents the Executive Office when required with the presentation of corporate strategies to UNDP audiences and/or external audiences to support their roll-out and implementation.
  • Advocates for policy and positioning of corporate strategies and policies and how they connect to the mandate and vision of the Executive office.
  • Interprets corporate strategies and policies and their impact and effect on the policy and management function of the Organization to ensure that back office and front office functions are fully integrated.
  • Represent the Executive Office at senior levels, as required, in inter-agency fora as well as internal UNDP meetings to establish agreements within pre-determined guidelines.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Advanced university degree (Masters’) in Social Policy, Public Policy, Politics, Development Economics, Development Studies or a related area.
Experience:
  • At least 10 years of professional work experience with the United Nations system, with sound knowledge of UN/UNDP systems, procedures and policies. 
  • Strong and effective communication experience.
  • Experience working in developing country settings is an asset.
Language Requirements:
  • Excellent knowledge of English, as well as writing, presentation and communication skills. Fluency in other UN languages is an asset.
