Organizational Setting
 
 FAO’s Nutrition and Food systems Division assists Member Countries to improve diets and raise levels of nutrition, as well as support with appropriate policies, strategies and methodologies for improving the efficiency and inclusiveness of their food and agricultural systems. Voluntary standards and associated labels, and local and inclusive market strategies are particularly relevant as they strengthen relationships between producers and consumers, through information or proximity, which directly contribute to more sustainable value chains and food systems. 
There is a need to analyse further these relationships, to create and share knowledge, and to build capacity for enhancing the contribution of marketing practices and tools to more sustainable food system and to nutritional value chain.  
All these activities fit within FAO’s Strategic Objective 4 “Enable more inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems at local, national and international levels,” and with the sustainable goals development 2 ‘” End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture’”, 5 ‘”Gender Equality’’ and 12 ‘”Responsible Consumption and production’’.
 
Reporting Lines
 
 The Consultant/ PSA works under the overall guidance of the Director, Nutrition and Food Systems Division and direct supervision of a Senior Officer.
 
Technical Focus
 
 The technical focus of the work is on technical, economic and policy analysis of food systems and value chains development for improving healthy food production and consumption and nutritional outcomes. More specifically, territorial approaches are part of the growing portfolio of approaches for sustainable food systems development being implemented. This includes origin-based label (Geographical indications, territorial brand), territorial development and markets, agrotourism and agroecology.
 
Tasks and responsibilities
  • Assist member countries with policy, economic and technical analysis of food systems and its different components, including origin-based labels, Geographical indications, territorial approaches, value chains development, market systems, institutions, regulations, for identifying entry points for increasing their efficiency, inclusiveness and nutrition effectiveness;
  • Undertake desk-review, data collection and information gathering of relevant evidence, lessons and good practices on geographical indications and sustainable development;
  • Perform and support activities of capacity development (e.g. organizing trainings, workshops, field missions, facilitating technical networks), project formulation and implementation (e.g. supporting work planning, providing inputs for reporting, etc) and project cycle management;
  • Assist in supporting resource mobilisation for country, regional and global level work;
  • Design policy, recommendations and briefs;
  • Coordinate multistakeholders processes;
  • Perform other duties as required,
     
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
 
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced university degree in (for Consultants) / University degree (only for PSA) in economics, agronomics, food sciences, food technology, nutrition, natural sciences, comparative law, development and social sciences or related fields;
  • A minimum of one (Level C) or five years (Level B) of relevant work experience in research, policy analysis, project implementation and mainstreaming nutrition in standards and origin-labels, food systems, food processing, food markets, value chains analysis, food security, , market systems, institutional procurement or other agri-food development approaches;
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian (for PSA only one language may be required).

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work
  • Extent and relevance of experience in project development and implementation of GIs and territorial development;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in food system and value chain analysis and development;
  • knowledge in legal frameworks, laws, regulations about intellectual property rights for national institutional  development and territorial approaches.
  • Familiarity with UN organizations
