UNICEF in Albania works with the government and other partners to promote good governance for children, as well as inclusive and protective policies, within the framework of the 'Delivering as One' UN Programme of Cooperation for Sustainable Development between the Government of Albania (GoA)[i] and United Nations (2017-2021) as well as the respective Country Programme Documents (CPD) for Albania (2017-2021)[ii].

How can you make a difference?

The purpose of the Internship is to provide a framework by which students pursuing a relevant tertiary education enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments in the different areas of work included under the U-Report Western Balkans, such as: promoting U-Report platform among young Albanians, updating social network pages, supporting development of polls and data aggregation, working with RapidPro and other relevant softwares. The incumbent will have an excellent opportunity to acquire practical experience in various aspects of project planning and implementation in the area of youth development, social protection in an international and human rights based work environment.

The intern will support the U-Report Western Balkans project by providing inputs and drafting various documents for the various type of activities such as:

  • contribution to the different phases of research and polling; 
  • contribution to development of rapid pro polls for U-Report; 
  • contribution to advocacy or communication briefs; 
  • contribution to develop various web materials for the project; 
  • responses to emails and messages; 
  • preparation of reports about web traffic and membership in U-Report Albania; 
  • contribution to data dissemination and communication activities; 
  • contribution to activities that involve the U-Report steering committee; 
  • support for the programme specialist and project coordinator in project monitoring; 
  • support with organization of different programme events/activities as required.

During and at the end of the internship, the following outputs are expected: briefing notes, handouts, minutes of the meetings and activities, data aggregation analysis, field visit reports, draft project proposals.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:

  • To be a current junior or senior undergraduate student from an accredited academic institution in communication, computer sciences or Social Sciences and other relevant areas
  • To be proficient in in English (working language of the office);
  • To be highly computer literate; advanced user of MS Office, Excel, PPT, skilled in programming software and GIS.
  • To have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, two reference letters from an academic supervisor;
  • To have NO immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office;
  • To have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to[1].]

Required Competencies:

  • Integrity and fairness by modeling UN values and ethical standards;
  • Cultural, gender, nationality, religion and age sensitivity and adaptability;
  • Knowledge and thorough understanding of Social Protection and Social Inclusion and the subareas of work described above;
  • Ability to produce high quality technical notes, briefing notes and presentations;
  • Ability to apply and share evidence derived from research;
  • Flexible attitude and adaptability to rapidly changing circumstances.

Other Relevant Information

The intern must keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or paper on the basis of information obtained except with the written approval and authorization of UNICEF.

Payment and Insurance

Intern may receive any stipend from governmental or non-governmental bodies (including private sector); If such payment is not received, UNICEF, subject to the availability of funding, may pay a monthly stipend as a contribution towards living expenses. A one-time lump sum may be paid to intern recruited from outside the duty station to contribute towards expenses such as travel to and from the duty station, visa costs, etc.

If required to travel as part of their official duty, interns will be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred during official travel authorized by UNICEF. UNICEF accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during the internship, including while on duty travel. Intern has to demonstrate a proof of medical insurance prior to the beginning of the internship.

Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining any required visa, covering the entire period of their internship. If necessary, UNICEF will support the process by providing relevant documents such as the proof of internship.

What to submit

  1. Motivation letter setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNICEF and what is expected from the experience;
  2. Curriculum Vitae or United Nations Personal History Form (P11).
  3. Letter from his/her University confirming current enrollment and graduation date;
  4. Proof of strong academic performance issued by recent university or institution, OR if not available, two reference letter from an academic supervisor.
