Social Media Officer

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT


The Social Media Officer plays a vital role in developing and executing the Office¿s content strategy with an eye to strengthening engagement with key audiences in support of UNHCR¿s media relations, advocacy, awareness-raising and fundraising objectives. This entails developing sophisticated plans to leverage web and social media content, platforms, networks and partners in line with the key priorities and audiences for the Division of External Relations (DER). In making these judgments, the incumbent will report directly to the Senior Social Media Officer and work closely with the Chief of Section, Content Production, and the Chief of Section, News and Media under the overall leadership of the Head, Communications and Public Information Service/ Spokesperson for the High Commissioner.

This role has a special focus on video which is specifically created for social media platforms ¿ the content type that drives the highest engagement for UNHCR accounts.

The incumbent will conceive and create social video content, placements and partnerships for UNHCR¿s global English-language social media accounts, coordinating with field-based PI and social media managers within country offices, and more widely build and leverage relationships with social media editors at leading news and media organizations, helping to secure external placement of UNHCR content and enhance coverage of UNHCR¿s work and the plight of refugees.

The incumbent will also work to develop and refine UNHCR¿s global social media presence, strengthening editorial coordination and engaging target audiences while addressing and averting potentially damaging conversations about UNHCR. This includes strengthening coordination and editorial planning among UNHCR social media managers around the globe to support media relations, advocacy, awareness-raising and fundraising objectives as well as strengthening analytics to inform the social media strategy and work-plans.

Because of the very public and fast-moving nature of social media, the incumbent must exercise outstanding editorial skills and political judgement in order to ensure that UNHCR¿s reputation is not damaged.



FUNCTIONAL STATEMENT

Accountability

- UNHCR social media content, particularly video, is developed and managed in line with DER¿s strategic objectives and targeting clearly defined audiences (i.e. news media, influencers, general public, governments, private donors, persons of concern, etc.)
- UNHCR content reaches and engages diverse and strategic online audiences, through a mix of formats, partnerships and distribution methods.
- UNHCR¿s global social media accounts are publishing content and being managed in a way which advances the organization¿s broader communications goals and maximizes engagement with priority audiences.

Responsibility

- Contribute to and execute a social media strategy for UNHCR that focuses on DER¿s primary audiences (general public, media, donors) and leverages opportunities for greater community engagement.
- In accordance with DER¿s communications objectives, drive production of high-impact social media content, including social video that effectively informs and engages external audiences and supports media and advocacy campaigns.
- Produce original and retooled content for UNHCR's various social media accounts, with a focus on video, which can include storytelling, news, animations, motion-graphics, live broadcasts and interviews to reflect UNHCR's mandate and messaging and increase UNHCR¿s social media footprint, engagement and impact across all relevant platforms.
- Strengthen use of UNHCR¿s core social media accounts (notably the global English accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, Medium, etc.), working closely with the Digital Engagement and Private Sector Partnerships teams.
- Establish and nurture relationships within global media partners (including news organizations, social media companies and relevant technology leaders) to strengthen UNHCR¿s social media content and help it reach a wide audience.
- Help develop, in collaboration with the News and Media Section and other key stakeholders in UNHCR, guidance on the creation of social media content in the context of new emergencies to help UNHCR provide credible, real-time information that supports media and fundraising objectives.
- Participate in relevant professional meetings and events to build active relationships across the industry; represent the organization externally when required.
- Help implement plans for strategic consolidation of UNHCR social media accounts.
- In cooperation with the Strategic Communications Section, ensure high-level message and branding consistency in social media content and platforms.
- Contribute to reports and analysis of UNHCR social video content to effectively inform results-based decision making and to monitor and drive the effective use of resources.
- Support and help shape guidelines, advice and training programmes to support the production and sharing of high-impact social media content by.
- Work in close collaboration with the Goodwill Ambassador Team on social video content partnerships with celebrity and influencers, with the goal of leveraging their social media presence to amplify UNHCR messages.
- Work with UNHCR¿s Private-Sector Partnerships team to ensure social video content can be repurposed for fundraising purposes.


Authority

- Decide on social media content for UNHCR¿s core social media accounts and platforms reaching different target communities.
- Post to UNHCR social media accounts.
- Manage user roles on UNHCR social media accounts.

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

- Undergraduate degree (equivalent of a BA/BS) in journalism, communications or related field plus minimum six years of relevant work experience producing multimedia content (including video, social, digital content) for online audiences. Graduate degree (equivalent of a Master¿s) plus 5 years or Doctorate degree (equivalent of a PhD) plus 4 years of previous relevant work experience may also be accepted.
- Minimum four years creating social media content for a large online community (over 1 million followers) and engaging global audiences with news-oriented content.
- Minimum of two years¿ experience commissioning, scripting, producing and publishing video content which is tailor-made for social media platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to write and edit social media posts to a standard high enough for immediate publication.
- Sophisticated understanding of the social media landscape, including trends in new tools and platforms, and particularly those gaining traction among news organizations.
- Experience using advanced tools for social media publishing, monitoring and marketing, such as SocialFlow, Hootsuite Enterprise, TweetDeck, etc.
- Substantial experience of working in sensitive and fast-moving news, communications, advocacy and/or fundraising contexts.
- Experience producing and interpreting social media analytics to inform strategy and work plans.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities within specified timeframes.
- Proven skills in communication, networking, strategic thinking, advocacy, negotiation, and ability to relate to different audiences.
- Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.
- Established relationships with social media editors at leading tech, media and international organizations who can be called on to help share UNHCR content.
- Strong diplomatic skills, highly developed political skills and judgment, understanding of UNHCR¿s external relationships, solid grasp of the news business, and ability to discern when the organization¿s credibility is at stake.
- Awareness of best practices in user experiences and design.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

- Expertise in using organizational tools such as Trello, Slack, Google Docs, and multimedia editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and other relevant Creative Cloud tools.
- Experience developing and conducting training workshops on social media and speaking about social media in relevant public forums.
- Experience providing on-the-ground social media training in humanitarian operational contexts.
- Experience working in an international non-profit context, or ability to demonstrate experience of an equivalent working context with awareness, advocacy and fundraising objectives.

- Fluency in English, with excellent written English required. Fluency in French desirable. - Social media is a central and essential component of UNHCR's efforts to engage key audiences, both in our everyday communications work and around major media and advocacy campaigns.
- Video has become the most effective form of content for engaging audiences on social media, yet also one of the most challenging to produce. Social media video production requires a well-developed mix of editorial judgement, creative acumen and technical proficiency.
- UNHCR seeks closer coordination of the production, publication and distribution of social media videos on its own channels (in various languages) as well as through cross-posting on social media accounts held by select media organizations, UN agencies and other partners. Duty station is Geneva, Switzerland with some travel, as required. This includes travel to meet with social media editors and influencers, to produce social video content in the field, to train UNHCR communicators in social video production, and to attend relevant meetings and conferences.
