Communication Specialist

The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks a highly talented Communication Specialist to drive the internal and external communications activities of the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas for Food Security and Income (RTB).

The Program: The CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB) is led by the International Potato Center (CIP) with Bioversity International, the International Center for tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and includes a wide spectrum of research for development stakeholders. This collaboration, with its combined scale and capacity, will increase the ability to advance research, share knowledge, and enhance uptake to increase research and development impacts. The purpose of RTB is to exploit the underutilized potential of root, tuber, and banana crops to improve nutrition and food security and foster greater gender equity especially among some of the world’s most poor and vulnerable populations.

The position: The Communication Specialist will be based in Lima, Peru. The successful candidate will be a member of CIP's Communications team and will report to both the Head of Communications of CIP and the Director of RTB. The principal tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Duties and Accountabilities:

• Update and implement the RTB communication strategy in coordination with partner Centers, programs and organizations.

• Leverage the capacities of RTB partners to raise awareness of the objectives and outcomes of the program.

• Ensure the knowledge generated by the program and its partners is open and accessible.

• Identify and coordinate media opportunities, including preparing press releases and opinion pieces.

• Coordinate, write, edit and upload blogs for the RTB website.

• Manage publishing of program-level publications

• Manage and maintain RTB social media channels. • Monitor and evaluate media, social media, newsletter, Google Analytics and altmetrics data.

• Develop and implement communication plans for RTB’s presence at international

events.

• Lead the preparation of the RTB Annual Report, including story selection and

messaging, writing and editing, supervision of consultants, and providing direction for

print and web versions of the report.

Selection Criteria:

• Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in journalism, communication, marketing or a

related area.

• Five (5) years of professional experience in developing and implementing

communication strategies or exemplary communications results in fewer years.

• Demonstrated experience working with media.

• Dynamic, accomplished storyteller across communications platforms, strategic, able to

leverage the capacities of others

• Strong and effective use of social media skills.

• Knowledgeable and familiarity with public relations.

• Experience with website content management.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

• Proactive approach, with ability to find creative ways to solve problems or exploit

potentials.

• Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English. Spanish language skills a

plus.

• Experience with international agricultural research for development, CGIAR, and

CGIAR Research Programs a plus.

• Strong written and oral communication skills in English, working knowledge of Spanish

desirable.

What are we offering?

The employment contract will be for a three-year term (with a three month probation period)

with the possibility of renewal, subject to availability of funding. The salary will be
