Under the guidance of the Programme Manager, South-South and horizontal cooperation, the intern will provide professional, technical, operational and administrative assistance throughout the programming process for South-South and horizontal cooperation through the application of theoretical and technical skills in researching, collecting, analyzing and presenting technical program information while learning organizational rules, regulations and procedures and objectives in SSC/HC and overall, in support of the DRP Office Management Plan and UNICEF’s Strategic Plan.

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers eligible/qualified students all over the world the opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff. This internship is for acquiring organizational knowledge of rules, regulations and processes to supplement academic and theoretical knowledge through on-the-job practical learning and mentoring, specifically, in promoting and supporting South-South and horizontal cooperation. The intern is also expected to contribute to UNICEF’s work and mission.

Under the guidance of the Programme Manager, South-South and horizontal cooperation, the intern will provide professional, technical, operational and administrative assistance throughout the programming process for South-South and horizontal cooperation through the application of theoretical and technical skills in researching, collecting, analyzing and presenting technical program information while learning organizational rules, regulations and procedures and objectives in SSC/HC and overall, in support of the DRP Office Management Plan and UNICEF’s Strategic Plan.

How can you make a difference?

 Under the guidance and supervision of the Programme Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Support to programme development and planning
  • Research and analysis of information on UNICEF and partner South-South and horizontal cooperation (SSC/HC) globally to identify trends, challenge and opportunities.
  • Preparation of technical reports and inputs for program preparation and documentation ensuring accuracy, timeliness and relevancy of information.
  • Conceptualization and development of SSC/HC tools promoting global learning and exchange of knowledge, expertise and good practices/solutions.
  • Program management, monitoring and delivery of results
  • Working closely and collaboratively with internal and external colleagues and partners to collect/analyze/share information on programme implementation issues
  • Participation in monitoring and evaluation exercises, program reviews and annual sectoral reviews including annual analysis of country office reports and other routine reports to extract and synthesize content relating to SSC/HC.
  • Participation in relevant meetings, and interagency for a on SSC/HC and take notes and ensure follow up as needed.
  • Knowledge management for South-South and triangular cooperation
  • Identification, capturing, synthesizing and sharing of good practice examples and lessons learned in the area of South-South Cooperation for knowledge development and to build the capacity of stakeholders.
  • Support to the exchange of experience within UNICEF and with partners on effective South-South and horizontal cooperation including supporting an online community of practice.
  • Responding to queries and drafting or providing inputs to report and communication materials on UNICEF’s South-South Cooperation work.
  • Overall, the intern will support the Programme Manager, SSC/HC, in delivering the Unit’s work and in strengthening UNICEF approaches to implementation and monitoring of South-South and horizontal cooperation activities.

Duration: This will be a full-time internship from 1 October 2018 through 31 March 2019

Salary/Payment:

In accordance with the internal standard operating procedure, interns are paid a stipend of US $1,500 per month for full-time work, subject to availability of funds. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work. If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

The intern will work at UNICEF House, New York.  S/he will work with the Policy Section and report to the supervisor of this internship.  S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in Section's meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled in Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master’s) or undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree in the area of social sciences or a related field; or completed at least two year of full-time studies of the undergraduate degree;
  • Excellent academic performance, as demonstrated by academic records.
  • Previous work experience is an asset
  • Additional consideration will be given to any past professional experience.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required, knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

In order to be considered, an Intern MUST attach the following documents with their application:

  • Letter of verification from the college or university that the intern is currently enrolled in an undergraduate school and has completed at least two years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an undergraduate degree (if the candidate is 18 years old, this replaces the two-year bachelor’s completion requirement); or, Graduate Degree Program (i.e., Master’s, PhD). It should also state the expected graduation date.  Recent graduates are allowed until 2 years after degree completion.
  • Copy of their most recent official transcript showing excellent academic performance
  • Copy of Identification Card (ID)
  • One letter of signed recommendation on letterhead or from professional email address
