Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Policy Division develops and implements the UN Women programme of work on analysis, research and knowledge management that provides the evidence base and global policy compass to guide UN Women’s work at country and regional level, the intergovernmental process, and the UN system on issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment. It identifies emerging issues and trends, and develops and proposes new strategies for achieving the agreed goals through innovative approaches and lessons learned about what works in practice.

Women’s political participation is a primary area of UN Women’s work. UN Women works to implement Outcome 2 of its 2018-2021 Strategic Plan, “Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance systems,” and contributes towards achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals, namely Goal 5 on gender equality. UN Women works with a range of partners and stakeholders nationally, regionally and internationally to ensure more women of all ages fully participate, lead and engage in political institutions.

UN Women’s work in the area of Women’s Leadership and Political Participation the access to knowledge on women’s political participation. Within this framework, UN Women supports the International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics (iKNOW Politics) jointly with UNDP, UN Women, International IDEA and IPU. iKNOW Politics is an interactive global online platform dedicated to sharing experiences, resources, and advice related to women’s political participation. As the leading global site for women’s political participation, iKNOW Politics empowers women worldwide by leveraging the power of information, technology and collective knowledge. The online knowledge hub, available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish, offers several features including access to expert advice, online discussions, webinars, interviews and a space for experience sharing. Additionally, the network provides an opportunity to the users to stay abreast of global events and news related to women's political participation globally and regionally. UN Women hosts the iKnowPolitics Secretariat on behalf of the partner organizations.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Global Policy Advisor on Political Participation, the Network Facilitator will provide policy and coordination support to ensure the website and platforms remains updated, knowledge is shared and the website is promoted.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support to programme coordination:

  • Provide coordination support to the daily maintenance and updating of the iKNOW Politics website in line with the decisions of the iKNOW Steering Committee members;
  • Provide technical and administrative support in the implementation of the annual work plan, project monitoring and evaluation and assist with reporting on website performance and utilization;
  • Maintain strong relationships with key staff of the partner organizations;
  • Identify complementary areas of work, potential opportunities for enhancing linking collaboration and synergies among the partners, including their communications sections;
  • Assist in preparing periodic progress reports to be submitted to partner organizations and donors, including preparing the monthly digest.

Provide technical input in the design of advocacy and communication strategies and plans:

  • Present and showcase the iKNOW Policy website project in relevant inter-agency gatherings, international and national conferences and internal meetings as needed;
  • Coordinate regular updating of all social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter etc.) to enhance advocacy around increased women’s political participation
  • Liaise with relevant networks, organizations and partner offices in developing knowledge products and in organizing learning platforms to promote iKNOW Politics;
  • Provide support to the steering committee in forging and implementing strategic partnerships to increase outreach of the iKNOW Politics network;
  • Maintain a watching brief on events and knowledge development in the arenas of women in politics and leadership. Provide technical inputs to updates or notes, attend relevant workshops, or provide administrative support in organizing gatherings/workshops/webinars to advance learning in this field, or to promote better programming.

Facilitate Knowledge Management and Organizational learning:

  • Maintain and grow the iKNOW Politics community, promoting community collaboration around project priorities, building relations with relevant institutions and individuals;
  • Conduct research for knowledge and information needed to prompt dialogue or e-discussions;
  • Facilitate the access and sharing, of specialized knowledge in the field of women’s political participation;
  • Work with language facilitator/s to cross-link expert contributions between regions and across languages;
  • Collaborate with each partner organization’s communication teams to ensure cross-posting iKNOW users;
  • Develop new online tools, surveys and other pilot projects as needed.

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Timely implementation of the iKNOW Politics annual workplan;
  • Timely updating and quality maintenance of the project website;
  • Effective coordination with the steering committee members and project partners, as well as consultants working on the project;
  • Effective advocacy and promotion of the project on social media websites;
  • Number of media articles, knowledge products and resources on women’s political participation disseminated;
  • Timely development and effective oversight of staff capacity development on political participation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree in International Development, Management, or another relevant field is required.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in coordinating projects on women’s political participation;
  • Experience maintaining and updating knowledge platforms or websites on political participation or related area;
  • Familiarity with different web-based knowledge platforms, content management systems or websites;
  • Experience with using social media platforms to communicate messages on political participation or related area;
  • Experience in programme analysis, evaluation and results-based management is an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language (Arabic, French or Spanish) is an asset.
