What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Purpose of the post
The Protection Data Unit has two main objectives: to reinforce the management of the data related to protection activities of the ICRC, and improve the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) with special focus on data protection.
The associate’s main task will be to support the Unit’s activities and particularly the conceptualization, implementation and promotion of new tools, contribute to the new Protection Innovation initiatives by helping in the identification of needs and the implementation of pilot projects. He/She will support the respective Project managers according to the Unit’s planning. The associate is in charge of supporting the Unit with the creation and management of a resource centre, migration of older databases and the management of digital communities related to data and analytics for the Protection Division.
This position requires a candidate with an expertise and experience with the use of web technologies, social media and project management together with a structured mindset in order to support the deployment of ICT projects, and excellent communication skills. Interest in new technologies and curiosity about innovation would be an asset.
Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities
1. Support the activities of the Protection Division and Data Unit related to Innovation and Digitalization of Operations (50%)
- Organise / participate in meetings and workshops.
- Support the selection and development of pilot projects
- Research on possible implementation on new technologies for Protection activities (Restoring Family Links, Detention, PCPiE etc).
- Give support regarding tools to teams in the field
2. Support qualitative and quantitative analysis (40%)
- Questionnaire design for assessments, especially regarding mobile data collection (device magic)
- Contribute to the reflection, development and implementation of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and analysis tasks to optimize evidence based understanding of PROT priority topics (data structure, coding qualitative variables, text analysis, data transformation, etc).Perform ad-hoc researches and data extraction requests
- Maintain/manage online collaborative community content
- Contribute to the internal communication of the PROT/DATA unit
3. Support development and deployment of ICRC case management tools: Prot6 (10 %)
- Prot6: support the Head of Project in the documentation.
Certifications / Education required
- University degree or diploma equivalent to a master’s degree in data analytics, interactive media, ICT, engineering, economics, information sciences or equivalent experience
Professional Experience required
- Maximum one year work experience (2 years if it is supplemented with traineeships)
Assets:
- Research experience in innovation projects with a high technology component
- Experience with automated collection and storage of data retrieved through web APIs
- Experience with humanitarian organizations or NGO's.

- Ability to compile and holistically analyse diverse datasets
- Very good computer skills (Word, PPT, Excel);
- Aged between 25 and 35
- Rapidity, rigor and good organization skills

Assets:
- Basic knowledge of R, Python, SQL or other relevant scripting and programming languages is desirable.
- Knowledge of data protection and data security issues.
Language
- Excellent command in English
