The mission of the Green Climate Fund is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their peoples.

Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies.  It is country-driven and undertakes actions which reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Since its establishment, the GCF has mobilized 10.3 billion USD, accredited 54 entities to channel its resources and approved 74 funding proposals. In addition, it has built up an extensive program to support developing countries identify their needs, in particular those who are most vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Position description

The Associate Professional – Partnerships and Outreach will help shape the profile of the Fund with its key stakeholders. This will be done within the mandate given to the GCF by the Governing Instrument and through Board decisions and guidance. S/he will be instrumental in advancing the GCF external relations efforts by identifying opportunities for partnerships with key stakeholders (public and private, governmental and non-governmental), by conceiving outreach events or cooperation that will expose wider audiences to GCF issues and messages, and by developing initiative and products to inform stakeholders about the Fund. GCF’s main stakeholders include: The National Designated Authorities, the Accredited (or potentially accredited) Entities, UNFCCC focal points, GCF Board, staff and experts, GCF Observer Organizations, Contributors to GCF, civil society and private sector. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Partnerships and Outreach.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Monitor the climate finance information landscape and identify potential partnership opportunities with relevant actors in the field; contribute to the development of GCF partnerships with its key stakeholders. Outline a roadmap for their short and long-term execution;
  • Liaise with Communication and Public Affairs Offices in other relevant partner organizations to ensure productive cooperation with key GCF stakeholders, especially regarding joint communication activities;
  • Create a hierarchy of relevant events in which the fund could be engaged. Help define corporate communications and media outputs that will be required for the successful execution of events in which the Fund participates;
  • Work with all teams to define themes for GCF driven events and speaking engagements of the Fund, in line with overarching GCF key messaging;
  • Assist in coordination of outreach programs for the Fund;
  • Conceive communications products that target GCF’s primary stakeholder communities, as well as potential new partners and the public at large; and
  • Perform other duties, as required.

Expected experience and qualifications*

  • Master’s degree or equivalent degree in Social Sciences or any other areas linked to this post, international relations, marketing, environmental policy, communication, economics, or related fields;
  • At least 4 to 6 years of relevant professional experience preferably within multilateral organizations, international development and/or non-governmental organization;
  • Demonstrated capacity to establish and maintain relationships with key partners, and ability to interface effectively with representatives from all GCF stakeholder groups (governments, CSOs, private sector);
  • Strong communication and advocacy skills;
  • Experience in organizing high-level outreach activities;
  • Innovative marketer with the ability to work at pace;
  • A team-player with a proactive and can-do attitude;
  • Experience of establishing strong working relationships with colleagues from different cultures; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential for this position; knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage.

*The person assessed by the Selection Panel as most suitable for the position will be proposed for appointment.
