Background

UNICEF, for 70 years, has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. UNICEF is invested in promoting children, including adolescents and women’s health and nutrition through innovative, evidence-based nutrition interventions delivered at scale.  UNICEF Zimbabwe is currently scaling-up multisectoral community based model to reduce stunting focusing on nutrition specific evidence based interventions shown to improve nutrition status and is initiating nutrition response towards school age and adolescent nutrition. Against this background, UNICEF Zimbabwe Nutrition Unit is seeking a young, driven, innovative intern to join the team.  The intern will help document the nutrition programme interventions and produce tools that help future programming.

 Objectives

The intern will document, lessons learnt, challenges, best practices, innovations in the both the multisectoral community-based model to reduce stunting and in the cross cutting pillar involving school age children and adolescent nutrition across the programme areas.

 Methodology and Expected Outputs

The current nutrition programme seeks to improve the nutritional and health status of children, adolescents and women in about 31 districts in Zimbabwe.

Under the supervision of the Nutrition Manager, the intern will be supporting the following activities:

  1. Social/community mobilisation activities for village health days and document lessons learnt and challenges.
  2. Documenting best practises, challenges, innovations and lessons learnt of nutrition interventions across programme areas including nutrition for school age children and adolescents.
  3. Assisting in organisation of meeting, nutrition programme reviews and other related events.
  4. Supporting scholarly documentation of nutrition programme implementation and support the Nutrition IMERP
  5. Assist in development of training manuals and packages for the programme implementation
  6. Work with communications department for documentation of real life experiences, successes and challenges faced in nutrition programming
  7. Assist with the conducting of programme reviews
  8. Support in data collection and reporting activities.
  9. Produce a quarterly bulletin for nutrition activities

    Internship Timeframe

    The intern will be engaged for 6 months from 1 October 2018 – 31 March 2019

    Internships Requirements

  • Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or its equivalent.
  • Student pursuing a Master's Degree in Public Health, Nutrition or related field

Work Experience

  • At least one year of progressively responsible professional work experience on nutrition programmes in either emergency or developmental work with experience in community based health and nutrition programmes.
  • Able to work within various teams and be able to contribute to the overall success of that team
  • Able to demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English required.
  • Ability to communicate in local languages is an advantage.
  • Ability to work with basic graphical design software a requirement

Supervision

The Nutrition Manager will be supervising the Nutrition Intern.

Other Internship Costs and Payment Modalities

Payment will be done according to UN guidelines on internship.

Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) for field missions outside Harare will be paid based on agreed rates between the Intern and UNICEF but conforming to UN guidelines.
