Organizational Setting
The position is located in FAO Project Office in Peshawar. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.
 
Reporting Lines
  • Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Pakistan and in close coordination with Assistant FAOR, the incumbent will directly be supervised by the Chief Technical Advisor / Chief of Party THAzA and Deputy Chief of Party THAzA (The Horticultural Advancement Activity).
  • Oversight by FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) and technical guidance by the relevant units in FAO Headquarters and/or RAP.
 
Technical Focus
Support and advise Provincial Coordinators, Agribusiness and Supply Chains and FFS facilitators, District teams with specific knowledge and advise on all aspects of Horticultural Crop development (including seed production, tunnel farming, orchard management, vegetables seedling production, fruit tree nursery development, post-harvest aspects etc).
 
Tasks and responsibilities
  • Support the District teams with specific knowledge and advise on all aspects of Horticultural Crop development (including seed production, tunnel farming, orchard management, vegetables seedling production, fruit tree nursery development, post-harvest aspects etc).
  • Support and advise the Provincial coordinators and Agribusiness and Supply Chains and FFS facilitators on all aspects of horticultural crop development and market oriented value chains.
  • In Liaison with relevant departments of Balochistan Provincial Governments, research institutions and other technical assistance projects ensure co-ordination and collaboration required for implementation of the Project’s horticultural crop production interventions.
  • Guide and supervise the introduction, demonstration and extension of suitable species and varieties, improved inputs, technical innovations throughout the value chain for improved horticultural crop production (and reduced post-harvest losses) in the project communities to increase agricultural productivity and enhance quality. 
  • Guide and supervise the Project’s farmer field school (FFS) programme for adaptive research and participatory learning of new and improved technologies and practices to increase the crop production and quality, including curriculum development, training of master trainers (ToT) and FFS Facilitators, implementation and monitoring of FFSs in the project commodity clusters in the application of improved technologies and techniques.
  • Develop recommendations on the design, site selection, installation and management of adaptive research plots for improved crop production as part of the project’s farmer field school programme.
  • In close collaboration with the provincial coordinators and agri business and value chain facilitators, design, support and supervise the implementation of a market-oriented production programme of high value horticultural crops with COs and FMCs (special focus on women) and implementing the necessary training of participants.
  • Develop effective training methods and modules for delivering training for Capacity Building with and training of FAO and GoB staff
  • Prepare technical reports on activities undertaken and prepare technical guidelines, field documents, and training materials.
  • Submit periodic progress reports as required by the FAO management
  • Perform other related duties as required by International Project Manager within the Agronomist’s area of technical competence.

Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced university degree in plant/crop sciences, agriculture, agri business and / or relevant qualifications
  • 05 years of experience within agricultural within agricultural sector in Pakistan, including market aspects, preferable in the private sector.
  • Working knowledge (Level C) of English. Good knowledge of Urdu and Pashtu;
  • Being a National of Pakistan

Selection Criteria
  • Expertise in smallholder production systems in arid and semi-arid agro-ecological zones of Pakistan.
