Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global anti-poverty network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in 177 countries and territories, working with them on their own solutions to globa, regional,l and national development challenges.

The Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS), which leads UNDP’s work across the Arab Region, is seeking an intern with an interest in addressing global climate and environmental issues in collaboration with various partners. Finding solutions to climate and environmental issues is a vital element in attaining SDGs while preventing conflicts and pursing stabilities in the region.  RBAS has been engaging in the promotion of inclusive and sustainable growth in the Arab States region together with the UNDP Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS), which is in charge of UNDP’s corporate responsibility for developing all relevant policies and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan.

To this end, the intern works as part of the RBAS Partnership Unit, in coordination with all relevant units in the Bureau, in supporting COs to explore partnerships with governments, the private sector, and different donors and funds with the focus on climate and environment issue as well as in broadening the networks to seek further partnership opportunities with other UN agencies, organizations, institutions and NGOs for the improvement of environmental conditions and sustainable development in the Arab region.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Contribute to providing the COs with technical advice with regards to climate and environmental issues on programmes/projects which are carried out in partnership with bilateral/multilateral donors through data collection;
  • Provide support for maintaining programmes/projects, expanding portfolio, and developing corporate information systems in relation to environment and climate issues in the Arab Region;
  • Provide support for assuring quality of the programmes/projects by enhancing evaluation tools of the experts and their ToRs, reviewing reports, and compiling lessons learned;
  • Assist to create a database on multiple donors, including private sector and  bilateral/multilateral partners to assist the COs to mobilize resources in leveraging their project impacts;
  • Provide support to the formulation of UNDP RBAS policy and guidelines for the implementation of funds from donors and funds, including administrative procedures, and methodologies of the development of indicators/benchmarks in measuring project impacts;
  • Contribute to reaching out to media and developing communication tools (e.g. presentation materials, infographic and brochures) to communicate impacts of programmes projec;
  • Other duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolment in an environment-related field, such as environmental economics, development economics, climate science, environmental law, business management regarding environment and other relevant areas

Language:

  • Fluency in English-- written and spoken-- is required. Proficiency in French or Arabic an asset.
